I have 10 R510's mounted in a 42U rack, I also have several R710 racks that are doing great :) However an issue I JUST noticed with the R510 Server rack is the back of it the computer surfaces are about 130 degrees nothing like my R710 racks and I think this is way to hot!!! I cannot find a single post (excpet one on here that was not answered) as to the solution, I have made sure the firmware is up to date.. Running SLES 11 SP 1 on them I don't think that matters... The BIOS not sure this second but has ANYONE seen this before? I have gone into the BIOS and made the only change I can see to the FANS to MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE, other then that I am stumped..

What is overheating? What are you receiving thermal errors or alerts against, and where are they reported?
Is the only issue your top cover getting hot? The system does not regulate the temperature of the top cover. Thermal thresholds for system components have been increasing over the years. Cooling on our servers has been intentionally made less aggressive with the last few generations to reduce power usage.
If you are not receiving any thermal warnings then the system is operating within expected thresholds. There is no issue. We added an option to 12th generation and later systems to force the fans to run at higher RPMs because many customers were concerned about the heat. I'm not aware of that option being added to 11th generation servers, and it is not necessary to force the fans to run at a higher RPM.
If you are concerned about the cooling then I suggest making sure that the BIOS and iDRAC/BMC are at the most current revisions. The iDRAC/BMC controls fan speeds based on system configuration, power usage, and temperature probes.
I'm not sure of the generation of R510 I have but I can always check, the issues was the backs of the machines were are 130 degrees and I sensed ZERO airflow thus the easy test of putting a piece of tissue to the front of the machine through the drive trays on the upper vent and just having it fall... does not do that on my R710's.. The recommendation on the iDRAC/BMC revisions sound good I will check them, I assume whether I pay for a license that is still an option for the iDRAC? (I have limited knowledge in this area I just know Dell charges for some part of it).

The licensing model was introduced with 12th generation systems. The R510 iDRAC functionality is hardware dependent. I show that the R510 comes standard with a BMC. You can upgrade the BMC to an iDRAC by installing an iDRAC express module. You can further upgrade an iDRAC express by installing an iDRAC enterprise module.
The BMC has its own firmware. If an iDRAC express is installed then it takes over BMC functionality and you no longer update the BMC. You instead update the iDRAC.
I still think they are running HOT and I sense no fan movment, is there anyway other then taking
off the covers to accomplish this that you know of??
If you install OpenManage Server Administrator in the host operating system you should be able to check the fan and temperature status of the system. If you have an iDRAC installed then you may get more detailed information than a BMC will provide.
