Docking Station Using Discrete Graphics
I have a G7 7588 with a NVIDIA GTX 1060 graphics card. I use three Dell external monitors (D3218HN) connected to a Dell D3100 docking station. It all works quite seamlessly, although setting it all up was a bit of a challenge.
The D3100 connects to the laptop through one of the USB ports. According to both Dell and NVIDIA, this means the external displays are NOT connected to the 1060 card, but are using the onboard Intel graphics card.
For everything other than gaming, this makes no difference, the computer works fine. But I like to run flight simulating software (X-Plane or MSFS 2020), and the games are limited by the GPU.
I'm thinking of upgrading to an Alienware laptop, but Dell sales told me if I use a docking station, I still won't be connected to the upgraded graphics card.
Is this really the case? And if so, is there any way to connect three monitors to the graphics card, maybe with a better docking station?
