946 Printer Problems....WHY?
1.Printer continued to turn on randomly (and button lit up) for @5 sec then shut off
WHY?
2. Searched MS/Windows updates and found two custom updates for 946 printers
a)"Dell Inkjet Drivers=AIO Printer 946 -released Aug 2006
b)Dell Imaging Printing-Dell AIO 946-released Aug 2006
Thought these might help.........installed
Bad move!
Must have corrupted Driver software. Now Desktop window comes up:
"Communication not Available" (with printer)
Did all the physical unplugging......... No help!
Decided to uninstall Printer and Re install 946 with original CD
Seems to have solved problem
What could I have done other than Uninstall and Install?
How did Dell get in MS/Windows updates?
I am on Auto updates for security and critical updates (MS/Windows)

I will continue to track this thread. I will NOT be going to part two, because it will just add to confusion.
Before we continue, I have a question(s). I see you made reference to the A940 and the 946.
Do have both printers?
How are both of the printers connected?
Operating system of your computer(s).

I have Windows XP SP3 installed
I orig had AIO 940 printer installed
I disconnected it and Installed the 946
Dell Tech said its fine as long as only one printer is asscoc and conn to my PC
I guess both driver CD are installed but I only use 946
Remember it was working flawless ly untill I custom updated those 2 946 updates from MS/Windows
I uninstalled the 946 and reinstalled it again
but there was a msg "A problem occurred during HDWR installation...etc"
yet it proceded to install printer
Note I had gotten this msg the first time I uninstalled and reinstalled printer yesterday
(I had printed 2 pages OK)
Today is when I received the Printer spooler Svc not running
Pudge
I just printed 3 pages....OK! after second uninstall/Reinstall
FYIBoth printers show up on printer window with 946 sgaded and 940 shown as off line
Reply See if this helps.
Disconnect your printer. Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer.
Restart your computer.
Download the XP Drivers for the 946 printer.
Install the XP drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

Thanks for sending me to 946 Priter updates. I picked up 2 of 3 updates for firmware they refer to:
1."Receive Fax but unable to print" 3/26/7 and
2."Required for Full operation with 946 printer" 11/7/6
The 3rd was for Vista ;I have Windows XP SP3
my Driver CD for 946 Printer that I installed shows Jun 2006 on CD
I have not installed yet but printer is working now
It should after I uninstalled and reinstalled twice

I have been asking the same thing for quite sometime. Vista offers you to also download drivers. I would turn that option off. I think it's in automatic updates. It's great to get all of your Windows Updates from Microsoft, I even have the custom ones.
I don't think it's a good idea to get driver updates from Microsoft. If you have a problem with a device, get the updated drivers from the manufacturer.
