I received a used A960 printer without the installation CD. I downloaded the latest Vista (32 bit) drivers (v.G10) and installed them without problems. Printing a test sheet went well, BUT the "When Finished is clicked: Open the All-in-One Center Software" option was greyed out. No AIO Center software is available under all programs so scanning is not possible.
I have updated the firmware and used the Dell Cleanup Utility repeatedly to remove any old drivers although my laptop has never had anything but Vista Home Premium on it. Every installation of the drivers produces the same result.
I've read the posts about not connecting the USB cable until told to do so and have tried to do everything suggested without success.
Disconnect your printer. Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer.
Restart your computer.
Go to device manager.(right click my computer, left click preperties, left click hardware, left click device mananger)
Go down to the USB Controller section and click the + sign. Starting at the bottom, USB Root Hubs, and working your way to the top, USB Universal Controllers, un-install everything in that section.
Restart your computer. Windows will find them all again and correct the one with the problem. Please be patient, the new hardware wizard will work 3-5 minutes before it's done.
I'd already downloaded and installed multiple times the remove printer patch, newest driver and latest firmware. However, I'd not seen instructions about removing the USB controller hubs and controllers in the device manager. I followed the instructions exactly to remove the printer using the Dell CleanUp Utility before rebooting. Then I went to work on the USB devices.
The following were listed in the USB section:
Generic USB Hub
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard Open HCD Host Controller
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
The first time I tried to uninstall from the bottom of the list, the device manager window "flashed" information while attempting the uninstall of USB Root Hub. In the end it was only possible to remove one of the last two "USB Root Hub" entries, so I removed to the Standard Open HCD Host Controller and the Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller entries. When these were uninstalled, all the entries disappeared.
After rebooting, I got only the first 4 listed:
Generic USB Hub
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard Open HCD Host Controller
USB Root Hub
When I started uninstalling from the bottom, everything went fine this second time. I rebooted again and then started reinstalling the driver. Everything seemed to go fine including plugging in the USB cable for the turned-on printer when I was prompted. However, as in all the multiple attempts to install the driver, at the end, the option to start the All-in-One Center software was greyed out because the fax/scanning software didn't install. Printing works fine, but without the AIO Center software it isn't possible to setup scanning.
I have an HP Pavilion tx1000 with Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit) and am connected to the A960 with a USB cable. I am using Symantec Endpoint Protection v. 11.0.2010.25.
I went through the Cleanup-the-computer/uninstall-the-printer process, rebooted, and installed the driver with the Symantec Endpoint Protection turned off (always worth a try). This time the print-a-test-sheet window didn't appear with the greyed-out AIO-center-software line. However, there is no AIO Center software in All Programs so I'm no further ahead.
Will Dell supply a replacement installation disk? Does it contain anything different than the driver which doesn't install?

Did you try it in this exact order?
Disconnect your printer. Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer.
Restart your computer.
Go to device manager.(right click my computer, left click preperties, left click hardware, left click device mananger)
Go down to the USB Controller section and click the + sign. Starting at the bottom, USB Root Hubs, and working your way to the top, USB Universal Controllers, un-install everything in that section.
Restart your computer. Windows will find them all again and correct the one with the problem. Please be patient, the new hardware wizard will work 3-5 minutes before it's done.
Download the proper drivers.
XP Drivers
Vista 32-bit Drivers
All other drivers
Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)
Please remember to install the latest firmware for the A960 Printer. (Message edited to include this)
Scanning
Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.
Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.
