I have a Dell 942 that stopped printing. I get a communications error. No printout. Suggestions are to unplug/replug usb cable, power cycle the equipment and such. When I unplug the cable, the system makes the usual disconnect sound and when it is replugged it makes the connect sound. The system recognizes the printer. No printout. I downloaded and installed drivers from the Dell support page. The install recognizes the printer during the install but no printout. I connected the printer to another pc and after installing it I can print. Help!
Please try re-installing the printer this way and then tell us what happens. Please make sure your computer has all the Windows Updates, especially .net framework, which is needed to run many applications. Also make sure you have the latest Java.
Disconnect your printer.
Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch(a MUST on Vista machines) until it prompts you to restart your computer. (You may have to right click on the patch, left click run as administrator)
Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect the printer(powered on)
As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.
Scanning
Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.
Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.
I have a Dell 942 printer and have installed it, but the OCR did not install. I have also followed your instructions about inserting the CD that came with the printer, stopped it from running, right clicked the drive with the disk in it, clicked explore, looked in the OCR Folder for the OCR, clicked it, and then clicked on the Abbyy Folder, but got a message that said: "No transform with user interface. Installation cannot run without language transform. Therefore, I'm stumped. Please tell me how to proceed. Thank you.
Does this printer use the Dell All-In-One Center, Dell Imaging Toolbox ot Dell Printer Home?
If you can click on the blue PudgyOne on the next page, start conversation with, you can answer those questions there. Also tell me if you have this installed.
No, I do not have ABBYY fine reader 6 installed. I recently had to reinstall my operating system and it got wiped out. However, I downloaded ABBYY fine reader 10, but that doesn't solved the problem of the OCR in my printer. I might add that I know how to add programs to be scanned to, but regardless of whether I set it on Word or any other wordprocessor, all it does is send everything to photos.
