Dell Inkjet Printer Jamming Troubleshooting

1) Determine what kind of paper feed issue is occuring.

Choose what type of paper feed issue is occuring from the following
list:

Paper Jam - Paper continues to get stuck in the printer.
Paper Skew - Paper feeds at an angle through printer.
Multiple sheets pulled - Printer pulls several sheets of paper
at once.

2) Verify optimal amount of paper in the tray.

Although each printer tray has a maximum capacity rating, this
rating is based on a specified paper weight/thickness. Consequently,
situations may arise in which the tray will not be able to accommodate
the maximum number of sheets listed in the printer specifications.
Verify that the paper is not packed too tightly in the paper
tray.

NOTE: Many paper trays have a "max fill" line to indicate the
maximum amount of paper that should be loaded at any given time.

3) Adjust the paper guide to the correct position. - A940

4) Locate and remove any obstructions inside the printer and
input tray. - A920/A940/A960/J740

To locate and remove obstructions from within the printer perform
the following steps:

Open the front cover and make sure the kickstand is engaged.
Locate and remove any obstructions within the printer such as
paper pieces, staples, tape, etc.
Close the cover.
Remove all paper from the input tray.
Inspect the input tray for any obstructions.
Replace the paper.

5) Try a different type of paper.

Many image quality and paper feed issues are caused by the type
of paper being used. Try a different type of paper that is specifically
made for this printer.

I hope this will resolve your issue.

After you have tried all of this, then try contacting Technical Support and arrange for a new printer to be send out under warranty. If its not under warranty you may be out of luck . Make sure to mention the steps you have already taken in an attempt to fix the printer. Good Luck

    COUNTRYBOY RYAN,

A MIRACLE HAS HAPPENED. I RECEIVED A REPLACEMENT DELL A940 PRINTER TODAY. I WAS NOT EXPECTING IT UNTIL TUE OR WED OF NEXT WEEK. I WAS TOTALLY SHOCKED. I HAVEN'T EVEN TAKEN IT OUT OF THE BOX. I NEED TO BUT DO NOT FEEL LIKE FOOLING WITH IT TODAY. ARE YOU THE ONE HAVING PAPER JAM PROBLEMS? IF SO, CHECK TO SEE IF THERE IS A TINY LITTLE SCRAP OF PAPER IN THE ROLLERS.

    for BUSHWYCK:

This seems strange....are you using standard letter size? Is the paper unusually thick or thin? Is it cheap quality?

Generally adjusting the adjustable feed guide to the correct size will fix this, but I'm surprised if it hasn't for you. Keep trying and let us know.

I am on hold right now with Tech Support for my A940 Printer.  It is pulling the paper to the right .  How frustrating is that ?  I am dreading my forthcoming conversation with a Tech from India .  I purchased 4 years of In-home service and have NEVER gotten that . Instead, Dell considers troubleshooting on the phone for an hour at a time in-home service.  I have spent a min. of 6 hours on the phone with Dell Techs.  The most frustrating experience I've ever had.  Has anyone had any success fixing this problem without returning the whole unit and has anyone ever received In-home service ?  I will never purchase another Dell again .  People may trash Compaq and  HPs , but my Compaq Presario took much abuse from 2 teenagers using it and for the 3 years that we used it solely, in-home service meant in-home service.

Well sounds like it's not the paper then.....

I'm still trying to figure out what might be a cause of "Paper Skew - Paper feeds at an angle through printer."

If anyone else knows hopefully they'll post or you can request a new printer if it's under warranty I suppose. :-(

After troubleshooting for only about 10 min. (which I knew wasn't going to remedy my paper feeding through crooked ) , Dell agreed that something was wrong with this A940 and they are replacing it .  That's fine and dandy excpet that the unit isn't even a year old , what is the cause and how soon will I have this problem again - I buy HP paper at Walmart and it's not expensive and works just fine - usually - The biggest problem I can see is that this is a common occurrence with Top Load printers.  I detest them and said I'd never own another one . I have an HP that runs smooth all the time .  I should save myself alot of misery and have someone just hook that one up to this Dell Dimension .  As for re-installing a printer ?  I've been there too .  As I recall, it was a lenthy process that a tech walked me through -- no less than an hour on the phone though . They too did ALOT of waiting for things to happen.
