I don't know that it's normal for the rest of the world but we have 2 which are doing the same. One does it quite badly and scared the heck out of the end user who assumed it was smoke!
I contacted Dell via the email support service and was told by them to call (0870) 9080800 as the laser printer support specialists were on this number and not available via email.
After I have spoken with them I'll let you know what they said.
Advice from the support line was that it's best to consider it a safety issue and if in warranty they will replace it but if outside probably best to dispose of them.
Dell issued a new software driver for this printer. They said that the printer may be going too fast and that the new driver should correct it. Another factor would be room temperature versus the temperature from the printer. If it is to cool in the rrom, you will see the steam from the unit.
They must be over heating for the problem to exist and so with excess heat + a water/electricity combination we took the decision to dispose of ours. Health and Safety concerns meant the risk was too high. Espacially when you can't be 100% sure your users will unplug them when unattended.
The Dell 1100 printer is a small form printer that has the fuser close to the output tray. Under certain environmental conditions you may see visible steam when printing. The product is working as designed and there is no need for any hardware or software changes.
