Big problem with NEC NR-7900a

I'm having extensive problems with this burner; something that seems rather common. It worked fine for a bit after I purchased my refurbished Precision 340, but is now incapable of copying a CD, burning a CD compilation, or burning a CD from an image (using both Nero and Easy CD Creator). Every time I attempt to burn a CD, I get about five percent through (this also at 24x, 8x, or 6x) the process and then get a burn process failed due to power calibration error. Searching on Google for the burner itself or the error message, turns up numerous results that most times link the two (the error message and this specific NEC drive). NEC no longer seems to support the device, driver databases haave none of its drivers, and Dell doesn't seem to have any upgrades either. From what I've read, the error I'm getting seems to have something to do with a need for a firmware updat, which is quite imposible given the lack of support. I really wonder why Dell is packaging this drive with any of its computers, seeing as the drive does feature this distinct lack of support from any party involved with its use. If anyone can give me a hand solving this problem, or has had the same or similar problem, please let me know. Thanks.

I'm having the exact same problem!  I've found the firmware driver but that did not help. I've also tried using different CD burning programs: Nero, Easy CD Creator, Clone CD.

    I've emailed tech support.

Same problem. I've heard that it runs fine on XP Pro. I might try that, but really would rather not.

Actually, I'm on a Dim 4400, but the 7900a seems to have probs with mult systems.

Me too! Running W2K and system does not even reconize the drive as a CDRW.

I am running xp pro -- i was able to burn a few cds on a cheaper grade cd.  Then it just stopped working.  Media Player will convert the mp3 files to audio format but 3-4% into copying the first track it poops out.  I tried downloading drivers, windows updates, etc.  I then went and bought a higher quality spindle of CDR's.  No luck.

I got the exact same problem with the NEC NR-7900A CDRW drive. At first the drive seemed to work, allthough burning files could only go as "fast" as 8x. Now even at 4x I get calibration errors.

I see these kind of messages in conjuction with the NEC NR-7900A all over the board, but solutions from Dell cannot be found. Can somebody please find out what is happening here. In the last few days I cannot even burn a single CD because of this problem....

DELL please find a solution to this problem. People are complaining about one of your products. Something that cannot be neglected. My Dell PC I am 100% pleased with. It runs like a well oiled sewing machine, but this NEC NR-7900A is a big mistake. Making mistakes is no shame, as long as you have learned from it and correct it a.s.a.p.!!!

    DELL, help me out please!!!

I have a demension 8200 and a NEC NR-7900A. My burner is suddenly having a very hard time. I CANT EVEN SEE IT! When I go to "My Computer" my CD drive doesnt show up. I tried a "add hardware wizard" and it just said that "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)". I also tired unplugging my CD Drive by going inside the computer and taking out the big orange thing. Then I restarted with it out, then tired with it in again, and it didnt work. What now?

My burner worked great for quite a while then suddenly began burning only singles, but some of those are only a few seconds long.  I have a Gateway and their techs gave up and said contact the manufacturer.  Thanks.  That's it in a nutshell.

The lousy NEC drive strikes again!  I've been having intermittent problems for a little while, but now it's shut down for good.

Dell?  Hello?  Are you out there?
