Error 1406 Repairing MS Office 2003 Basic - Unable to Write Registry Key

Cannot install Security Update for Excel (KB905756).  After following all the MS update failure instructions (clear disk space, try larger update file, check reistry keys,...) I tried repairing Office 2003 Basic and am getting the following error message:

Error 1406. Setup cannot write the value ButtonText to registry key

SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InternetExploreExtensions\{92780B25-18CC-41C8-B9BE-3C9C571A8263}

Can anyone shed any light on things?

    The suggestion improved, but did not correct, things.  Now what takes place is that the installation appears to go far beyond the previous point of failure, but ends up "hanging" the machine.

    A quick google says you're not alone with this "button" error. Here's what MS suggested. Go to this link and manually download the Excel update. Log off the net and install the update by double-clicking it. Have your Office CD handy because you may be prompted for it. Reboot when the update is finished, log back on to MS's update site and allow it to scan your system for it's update history. It should now show this update has installed and Office should run again.

    You can also grab a free copy of Belarc Advisor which will show you what updates are installed and if any need to be reinstalled.
