Do you have any other processors to test on the R840, to make sure there is no issues with the CPU slots. The error indicating proper CPU installation, have you tried swapping the CPU that was originally installed when updating the firmware. 

About Intel Platinum 8173M, I'm unsure if the server supports the processor. I tried looking for the processor's specification in Intel ARK: https://dell.to/3i1OzoQ but to no avail.

We did try with the 6132 CPU's we had previously, and it works fine. So it seems to be a CPU issue.
It's funny, the 8173M doesn't show on R640 or R740 Technical Guide as supported, but works just fine in those servers.

If you put 2x in the R840, it works. But when it goes to 4x, it doesn't work. Interesting feature about that CPU it seems, to not want it to be in a quad CPU configuration. 

Just wish I knew what it was holding that up from working (why is it that CPU doesn't work in 4x setup)

Either way, we'll have to move these to R640's and buy some 8160's.

Installing another CPU should minimize the root cause to the 8173Ms.

That was my first move, checked the guide on R740, I didn't find any information too on the specifications. You did mention that R740 does support, R840 shouldn't have the issue so that made me wonder. Digging deep, I'd try to look at the list of supported CPU and couldn't find 8173M on R840 or in Intel ARK. 

R840 gave an early warning possible it's unsupported, than R640s and R740s. I'm unsure if R640 going to show any issues later, but if it does, then we'll know it's the processor.

When you purchase the server, does the CPU comes with the server or it's an upgrade? I don't think that the server supports the processor.
