Drive does not eject immediately?

Hello there,

Just posting to ask if anyone else gets this with the Sony DVDRW drive in their Inspiron (Mine is 8600)- when I go to eject (either by pressing eject button, Fn + F10, or using Windows own inbuilt eject feature in My Computer's Context Menu), the drive just doesn't eject. The lights don't come on or anything. But then sometimes it does eject?

It happened just then during installation of UT 2004, it asked for Disc2 but since the drive wouldn't eject I had a bit of a problem as you can imagine... I tried disabling "DLA" in My Computer and then suddenly it ejected after I pressed Eject after that... but surely that can't be the reason/cause of it can it?

Thanks for reading
jeff.

This is my first post on this forum, so please B nice. I am having a similar problem with my brand spanking new 8600. The only way I can remove a DVD or CD is to re start the computer. Does anyone have a solution before I contact Dell. I love this laptop and really dont want to have to send it back for repair.
    Please help.
    Thanks

for me, it was because of that CD packet writing program [i forget the name].  if you right click on the CD drive there should be an option something like 'use DLA' i think.  uncheck it.  i removed the program totally as it was preventing my firewire drives from mounting if i had a CD in the laptops drive.

What is the point of DLA? Will it stuff up something else if I remove it? I'm a bit cautious because the lack of ejecting isn't that big a deal to me since it usually will eject after a few tries... but it is concerning sometimes ><

DLA stands for drive letter access.  It is used by a packet writing cd burning program - one of those programs that allows you to drag and drop files onto CDRs.

I have never used one of them personally.  If you don't use it, removing the program is not going to hurt you.  It will just free up a bit more memory because you will have one less process running.

Last weekend I reinstalled XP to get rid of all of the Dell pre-installed apps and my computer is thanking me for it...
