Hard Drive Recommendations

I have a 60 gb (reads as 55.8) hd. How much free space do you recommend I maintain to prevent loss in performance/crashing etc. I currently have 14gb free but I find I'm using up all the free space particularly quickly.
 
Also, on uninstalling a game (UT2003, 3+GB), I did not seem to free up 3gb worth of memory like the folder size suggested I would. Why is this? (my free space only went up about 1gb)

    Do a disk cleanup.
     
    Defrag the drive.
     
    Also remove files not needed like MP3's, Pictures Etc and burn them to CD or DVD, that will free up alot of space.
