Yes, leave the IDE cable off the 166 for now, what you are doing is testing one drive at a time. We have found that one bad drive can effect both if on the same IDE cable.
Try the 8631 and see if it works, if not, while it is the only drive, try flashing it again, test once more.

Uninstall the 8631 from Device Manager, remove the IDE cable from it and try testing the 166 as the only drive, does it work?

Sounds like we all get those honey do lists, I did all that we talked about and it looks like the 8631 is working it plays dvd and the link for formatting is visable again, is there any thing else that I can do

OK, i did the 166 and I tried to update it with the GD30, I got a warning box that says it cannot be updated so I closed it out and tried a dvd and it played fine.

I,m all done for tonight so i`ll get to it again tommorrow, thanks.

ok, I did the update for the 166 and that worked out fine, what is the next step cause I still have the 8631 unhooked from the IDE cable.

Hi Schnapps,

Uninstall the 166 from Device Manager, shutdown and re-connect both drives and boot your system, see what happens.

I did all of the above and everything seemed fine until i right clicked on the dvdrw icon just after I inserted it into the drive and then the computer froze again, at that stage I had to walk away because the computrer was going to go through the window, aggghhhhh....

Today when I returned the computer had a blue screen with the following message;

Problem detected windows has shut down to prevent damage , a process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated, check to make sure any new hard/software has been properly installed, if this is a new installation ask the maufacturer if there is any windows updates.

If problem continues, disable or remove any newly installed hard/software, disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to disable components , restart your computer, press F8 to to select advanced start up options and then select safe mode.

Do you think this computer has more problems other than the 166 & 8631 or did I right click on the icon too soon after I put the disc in because this has happened a lot?

Both drives play media and the 8631 has formatted a blank dvd-r,

Yes, you may have additional issues, but also you might have dislodged a card, cable or a memory chip while
working inside the PC, easier to do than one thinks.
Shutdown, unplug the system from the power source, hold the Power on button down for 5-10 seconds to "bleed" off any stray current.
Open the case and check your connections, if all are seated properly, you should try Clearing the NVRAM, Section 11, article 2 of the CD/RW link.
