retrieving data from old HDD

I just intalled a new hard disc.  I was told to bring the old disc to Best Buy to retrieve data or I can do it myself with a cable.  How do I do that?  The old HDD was not able to be identified at all.
Thanks

If the drive wasn't recognized at all, there's nothing you or Best Buy can do. You'll need to contact a data recovery service - brace yourself for the cost of this though; a routine recovery will run $2,500+.

If the drive is recognized, mount it in an external shell and connect it by USB to see what you can recover.

What is the cable that will connect to my old Inspiron 8600 hard drive that will then connect it to my USB port so I can see it as an external hard drive?

    Larry,

If you will go a Google search for "2.5" drive cable" you will get several hits for a drive cable that will let you connect your portable drive to a desktop PC, internally.
