unmountable boot volume

WinXP Pro SP1 (no updates because we just formatted & re-installed)
Boots to unmountable boot volume error
chkdsk /r at 75% says "the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems"
fixboot says the same thing
Downloaded and ran Dell Diagnostics. Ran almost all of the tests (I stopped it after 4+ hrs when it was checking CDs) and everything to that point came up clean and functional.
Downloaded and ran Drive Fitness Test (v4.02) from the Hitachi/IBM site and that also came up clean and shows the HD as OK.
What I don't know is whether the Dell Diagnostics checks the Motherboard. Does it?
