My only help is to say use symmwin if ECC does not reflect out the error. Maybe you will like to check your alert management?

The specific alert within ECC that you need to enable is in the following tree under the Alert Management folder:

Alert Management => Alert Definitions => Storage Agent for Symmetrix => alarms => device => Physical disk drive failure_00

This is a little confusing because it will generate an alert for multiple devices on the drive, but you will know when a drive fails at least.

What this does not catch are cases when an EMC phone home may be generated due to errors on a drive not an actual complete drive failure. In my experience quite a few drive (maybe 25%) of replacements are preventative due to indications that a drive is failing and not an actual failure.

The Remote Support Gateway is supposed to provide some better alerting on EMC dial-home activity which I am very interested to see.

When you have spar-disks, then you can execute following command:
symdisk -sid #### -v -spare_info

Actually symdisk is a very good command to find out the bad disks in DMX
