Dell Client Manager setup

I'm confused on how to use this product--without using all the trial Altiris stuff.  Is there any documentation available?

Also...our site is only one OU in the ADS Domain...this program doesn't seem granular enough to work with the computers ONLY in that OU...any way to change that?

Thanks!

The Client Manager program is a suite of tools from Altiris which requires licensing. What are you looking to do?

Can you use the Dell Client Manager to push out multiple versions of clients?  I thought you could only push out the "latest" (7.3?) version that is wrapped inside the Altiris client?

    I'm SO confused...

    Thanks!

I TOLD you I was confused!

I thought I had to use DCM for monitoring--what's the difference between it and ITA?

Thanks, you've been MUCH more helpful than Dell, and, I called them several times about this!

I'm not sure which client version works with those models. If it's 7.x then you should be OK. I have a lot of 7.1 clients out there that work just fine.

Mainly just monitor for problems--maybe push out some updates, but, I COULD do that with SMS, without having to pay Altiris, I suppose.

I see that the newer client doesn't work on older computers...we have a LOT of GX1, GX110, GX150, GX240 computers still out there, that, may not load the client, so, I feel somewhat betrayed...

    Thanks.

Bill, I am talking about using ITA and the OMCI client and not using OMCC at all. The Altiris software is licensed and the ITA and OMCI is free with Dell servers.

You can do an administrative install of the clients and monitor them using ITA 7.3

It's really two ways to do the same thing. If you are running Microsoft SMS though you may want to use that instead. ITA is a Management Station Application - in other words you run ITA on an XP SP2 machine or Server 2K3 machine to monitor the "clients" that simply have the OMCI piece installed (Servers will have to have the Server Administrator Managed Node piece installed).

From the ITA management station you can manage and monitor your servers and workstations, update your servers and clients BIOS, PERC firmware, ESM, etc.

I was in the same boat. I started to install the Altiris stuff and then found out it was a licensed product so I went to the free Dell stuff. The biggest pain I had (besides lack of quality documentation) is that the ITA exposed a problem with my DNS. So make sure your DNS is configured correctly (my problem was that Aging and Scavenging wasn't running and I had multiple records for the same machine) ITA relies heavily on DNS to discover clients.

If you go down the ITA road check my "Note to All" post. It has links to relevant documents that can save you a lot of time and trouble. Unfortunatley I found them after I figured stuff out.

    Good Luck! :smileywink:
