HijackThis Log - Adware.mainsearch problem

Hi

My Dell laptop has been infected with Adware.mainsearch.  I have tried Norton and Adaware SE to remove it.  Both detect it and remove it but it comes back every time I switch the laptop on.  It causes my home page to go to about:blank which is a search engine web page.   Also when I go to the Hotmail page it directs me back to about:blank web page.  I also get pop-ups telling me that the system is infected and provides links to spyware removal software.  If I click on any of the search links on about:blank it takes me to http://oz.msie.tv/

I ran SpyBot and it found 12 problems - listed below:-

5 problems listed under DSO Exploit

7 problems listed under CoolWWWSearch

I have a sceenshot of the details if you need that information - let me know?

SpyBot fixed all 12 problems.

HiJackThis produced the following findings:-

    David,

    Ok. Let's start off by...

Download CWShredder, unzip it to your desktop, and run it. Next, check for and download any available updates, before clicking "Fix ->"

Run AdAware again and "perform a full system scan"; make sure your scanning for ADS.

    Now, let's run HiJackThis, then:

    1. click " Config..."
    2. click " Misc Tools"
    3. click " Delete a file on reboot"
    4. browse to, then double-click on each of the file(s) below, one at a time:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pdhdp.dll

    5. when prompted to " Reboot Now", after selecting each file, select " No"

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

    regsvr32 /u pdhdp.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:NavigationFailure
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:NavigationFailure
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:NavigationFailure
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:NavigationFailure
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:NavigationFailure

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:NavigationFailure

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3AECB507-A34B-43BE-AA69-D67EB720A1E2} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pdhdp.dll

    O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

    Reboot your computer normally.

    Post back a new log.

    Mike.

    Hi Mike

I followed your instructions.  CWShredder found CWS.Hiddendll and fixed it.

Adaware found several problems and fixed all of them.

Ran HijackThis to delete the following file on reboot - C:\Windows\System32\pdhdp.dll as you suggested but the file did not exist.

Opened command prompt to unregister the dll - this was not found.

Second scan in HijackThis detected only 1 problem and was fixed - 04 - global startup: digital line detect.inc = ?

Here is the latest HiJackThis log - can you let me know if you have any other recommendations? Not been able to test the laptop on the internet yet as we are visiting friends over the holidays.

    Thanks

    David

    David,

Looks like you've nailed it! Good work!

    -

These are the only entry(s) I see that need to be fixed...

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Tiscali 10.0
(I'm not sure what "Tiscali 10.0" is. It's almost seems like a version # for something that had HiJacked, or attached itself to IE.)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CA31AA52-C9A2-4B31-8F15-5ACDA1C1F824} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pdhdp.dll (file missing)
(It looks like the file was removed (AdAware might have gotten it), so we'll just remove the reference here.

If everything is running ok, lets do some cleanup...

    1.  Run "Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.

    2.  Disable, then re-enable system restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new restore point manually.

If your having any more problems, just post back ... :)

    Mike.

    Hey David!

Sorry for not getting back with you sooner, i've been getting so many e-mails, this one kinda got burried in the heap - i'm finally getting them cleaned out though ... :)

    -

    Let's see what we've got...

There may be a 'backdoor' agent running on your system, so let's download fxagentb from Symantec, and follow the directions on that page.

Now, for safe keeping, let's run CWShredder again - hopefully it'll come up clean.

    Next...

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\DAVIDM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.dll/sp.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\DAVIDM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.dll/sp.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Tiscali 10.0

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

    -

    Reboot your computer.

    Post back a new log.

    Mike.

    David,

I think we've got it! - Good work! Thanks for the feedback, that really helps to refine my work. How's your sysem running? Ok? Does everything look resolved?

If everything appears to be ok, let's do some cleanup...

    1. Run "Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.
    2. Run AdAware SE and Spybot S&D and allow them to remove everything they find.
    3. Disable, then re-enable system restore; with a reboot in-between. Make sure to create a new system restore point manually.
    -

You should be all set to go, if your having any more problems, just post back.

    Mike.

    Hi Mike

Hi Mike, thanks for getting back to me. Here are the details of the actions I carried out. I ran fxagentb, on the first scan Norton Antivirus came up with two messages, each one appeared six times each throughout the whole scan.

    The first message said:

    Virus found:
    • Object Name: C:\windows\system32\winkga.dll
    • Virus name: Backdoor.agent.B
    • Action taken: Unable to repair the file

    The second said:

    Virus found:
    • Object Name: C:\windows\system32\winkga.dll
    • Virus name: Backdoor.agent.B
    • Action taken: Access to the file was denied

    The fxagentb gave these results:

1 file found – to be deleted on reboot
No. of scanned files – 64786
    No. deleted - 0
No. of viral processes terminated – 0
No. of viral threads terminated – 49
No. of registry entries fixed – 0

CWShredder found CWS.HiddenDLL, which was removed

I ran HiJackThis and removed all the file you listed.

Here is the updated HiJackThis log:
