What exactly does this do to my computer? I did all of the stuff, but I am curriuos as to why these things mess up the programs, and how I can keep this from happening again.

It's difficult to explain. Some loop your internet requests through their servers, that way, they can record your ip address and everything your requesting and receiving, and some compromise your system for even more infections.

The reason those types programs mess up your system, is they're not really designed to work with 'others' very well. some might lock up resources and cause and complete system crash, or at best a performance lull.

The best way to prevent what your system was infected with, is to understand how it was picked up in the first place. Without more information, I can't help you with that. Just watch where you browse, and what you download on the internet.

Using "Start | Search..." look for *mwsoemon* ; let's see if something is hiding in the prefetch folder.

Absolutely no problem. One way to do it, is to click "Start", then click "My computer", then double-click your system disk icon (usually local disk), then double-click the "System" folder icon, then double-click the "Prefetch" folder icon, then just scroll down and right-click on the file (icon) your trying to delete, then select  "Delete".
