Last Thursday night I was on the internet when the internet page dimmed and then I saw a message that read "Not Responding". My computer was then froze. The only thing that I could do to was to shut down the computer and restart it. THis has happened every time I go on to the internet - since last Thursday night.
This morning I turned on my computer and a the "Windows Errror Recovery" screen came on. I chose the option to "Run Windows Normally". This then lead me to a page that ready "Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. Volume label is OS. One of your disks needs tobe checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommeneded that you continue. Windows will now check the disk."
Then the screen went to the screen that one gets right before the log-in one. The screen is black with the following message "(c) Microsoft Corporation" and a bar. This screen remained for at least (and I watched my watch) 2 minutes. I then manually shut down the computer.
I then turned it back on. AGain, "Windows Error Recovery" I clicked the option to start windows normally. The computer then acted like it was going to start normally, going to the black screen that read "(c) Microsoft Corporation" with the bar, then it went to a screen that said "Startup Repair. Checking system for porblems..." this screen looked like an early 90s version of windows.
The computer then restarted, after going through that check....and then it was normal.
This evening, I started the computer - everything was normal, until I opened internet explorer. It loaded properly, then froze and I got the "Not Responding" message.
this my daughter's lap top, Vista O/S, a different computer than the one I had the problem with earlier this month.
You still need to mention what specific model it is - for the benefit of those who haven't read about the other problem you had, and since it might affect the answers you get?
Is your daughter's laptop still under warranty? Given the nature of the problem, I'd say it would be best to call tech support, and ask them for advice?
If it's out of warranty, or if you want to try and fix it yourself, you need to start by running the diagnostics tests.
Assuming those are all OK, you may need to do a 'Repair' install?
The computer is Vostor Notebook 1000, Shipped on 12/26/08. My daughter called Tech support yesterday and Tech support rebooted the computer is Safe Mode and downloaded Adware on the computer and started a scan which ran all afternoon and never did anything. Tech support also stated that it sounded like a sofware problem and offered to transfer her call to that department for a charge. I believe the warrenty ran out yesterday on the computer. She is home from college and all of the papers for the computer are at school. The Motherboard was replaced on this computer about 3 month ago. Also, I forgot to mention that the Task Manager will not open.
The volunteer analysts listed in the announcement at the top of the Malware Removal Forum have been having a problem posting. Until Dell fixes the new software issues, I cannot get into a long fix. I can offer a suggestion to run a couple of general scans. If that does not fix the problem, click on the link in my signature and post at SpywareHammer for a follow-up review. Include your logs from the scans along with a fresh HijackThis log.
If you cannot use the internet on the computer with the problem, use a clean computer to download these to a CD or USB stick and transfer them to the other computer.
Try scans with these two programs in the following order:
Please download to your desktop Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked Click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Extra Notes: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. * If you are unable to download or install MBAM on your computer, see if you can use a friend's or family member's computer to download MBAM. Use this update link here to manually download the update. Once downloaded, rename the program installer "mbam-setup.exe" file to something else like "catchjunk.exe". Copy the installer file and the update file to a CD or flash drive. Transfer the file to the infected computer. Install the "catchjunk.exe" file, then run the update so that you will have the current definitions. After that, run a full system scan and select to have the program REMOVE whatever it finds.
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.
Download and scan with Super Anti-Spyware Free for Home Users. It is available HERE: *Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation. * An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program. * If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.) * Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button. * Click the Scanning Control tab. * Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
Close browsers before scanning. Scan for tracking cookies. Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
* Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen. * Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer. * On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive. * On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan. * Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer. * After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK". * Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next". * A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu. * If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
Bugbatter - I posted this last night on the link you suggested due to the problems with dell. I have not had a reply so I am reposting to this forum. It was posted on the other forum in the Post the HJT log with the subject being Windows Error message - followup. I apoligize if this is incorrect, Please let me know which forum you would prefer me to use.
OK, this is what I have now done.....
Dell did not walk me thru the Start up repair, but I did go thru it this morning.
A fresh HJT log:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 10:10:07 PM, on 12/27/2008
Platform: Windows Vista SP1 (WinNT 6.00.1905)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6001.18000)
Boot mode: Normal
I downloaded the FixPolicies to USP and installed on the problem computer
I downloaded the Malwarebytes'Anti-Mailware to a USP and installed on the computer. It did update on the computer.
I was running the scan and 4 minutes into the scan the program stopped responding. The task manager will not open and will have to manually shut the computer down and reboot. I will continue with the scan tomorrow. Is there anything I need to do before I continue with the scan?
