Move Centera Data

IHAC with NS600g (CUA with Centera Gen4)

--10TB of data archived to Centera

--Celerra have only CIFS with 10 file system with 10TB data (no NFS)

Now customer wants to decomission Centera since it was leased. And archive not happening for last 7 months.

I have following questions,

(1) How to move back the data back to Celerra (source)?

(2) If moving or recall has same meaning; then whats the steps to follow?

(3) Any configuration to be done from Celerra side to get all data from Celerra?

(4) If recalling to be done done; whether it is file system by file system?

Please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

    Hello -

Recalling archived data through CFA/CUA for migration can be very slow, but it is do-able. You can use standard CIFS tools like robocopy to copy that data to a non-CFA Celerra/VNX volume.

My company (Interlock Technology, www.interlock-tech.com) is an EMC Partner offering a service to migrate this data off Centera at high speed (multi-TB per day), with retention policy and chain-of-custody preservation, full reporting and without taking the current system offline until migration is complete. You can find us on PowerLink or contact us directly at info@interlock-tech.com.

I do not have enough space in Celerra at the moment. This needs to be evaluated.  I understand this is required for recalling data from Celerra too.

-Can you pl give me some insight how you get the archived data to target volume by using robocopy?

-How you are going to share the "CENTERA space to a host" to make it as source to copy the data to target volume?

Please note - Centera, CUA/CFA will not be in the environment once all the data are back in Celerra.

I don't believe there is a method or procedure  to "rehydrate" the Celerra CFA stubs in-place on the existing Celerra volume; you would need additional NAS space to safely construct a full second copy of this data. Cloning the data with robocopy is conceptually easy (copy existing share A -> new share A') but the recalls through CFA during the copy will be very slow (especially with an average file size on the smaller side).

Interlock's system does not create a share from the Centera; we use the SNIA XAM protocol to read the clips and blobs directly from Centera and copy them to a new NAS volume with all of their filesystem metadata and file data in place. Once this data has been verified on the target to match the source volumes exactly, your CIFS clients can change their mount scripts to use the new volumes and the existing CUA/Centera combo can be retired (and the original Celerra source volumes can be re-purposed).

    Thanks!

So, if we have space in Celerra; we can recall the data. When we recall the data from CENTERA to Celerra; it will be transparent at client level. No action required at client side. ****But if you use the method you suggested (SNIA/XAM) you need to remount to new Share Volume at client level. Correct?

    Am i wrong?

    You're welcome.

I see that as a reasonable summary of your options. You can contact us directly via the eamil addresses above if you would like to discuss this in more detail. Best of luck with your project.
