Right now I am on my fourth system reinstall to figure out this mess DELL gave me since I use Norton on all my computers.

 

If you're doing fresh installs, then neither AOL nor Norton would be on the computer...  I'm confused.

Yes, I know what Symantec PC Restore does.  :smileywink:  You said "fresh" reinstall of system, I took that to be a CLEAN install of Windows, but what you did was restore the computer to its "as-shipped" condition.  That's why you have AOL still on it.

I assume you did a correct uninstall of all AOL stuff prior to messing with Norton?

At windows boot up when sceen says Dell.com at top, press control/F11 to reinstall windows as received when it was new, with all software preinstalled. That's how this laptop is set up. Dell uses Norton software to restore system.

I always do proper uninstalls, I maintain four computers at home, and four at work, two of them Dells, this laptop is the only one that I am trying to keep "true to form". I use win 98, win 2000 and XP Pro constantly on these computers. I know the in's and outs of them all.It just irritates me that some one would compromise the stability of a computer by preinstalling problematic software with a proven bad track record, and it can't be removed without ruinning the function of the computer. I always use Norton for my antivirus protection. I have the three year enhanced warranty on this but alot of good it does when Dell doesn't want to correct an error on their part.

Symantec's site offers guidelines on how to remove all traces of Norton products.  Follow those, then try for a reinstall of Norton.
