black screen before login

Hi, i've been having a problem lately. The computer was working perfectly before but i accidentally pulled the power cord while shutting down. The next day, i try turning it on and this problem occurs:

Everything is working fine, but right before when the login screen should appear the screen just turns all black. Normally, the dell logo appears with the loading bar, then a lot of white words with black background is on the screen, and then the words disappear and new white words appears, and then the login screen appears (sorry, i don't know anything about computers).  But this time, the 2nd set of words are cut shorter than normal (only 1 line this time) because the black screen appears. the pc is still working though i think because i can hear the fan.

i think this "might" be the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/KB/314503
but i dont have a floppy disk drive, and when i put in my windows xp cd, it doesnt load. I tried booting with cd, but nothing different happens from above.

Sorry if you don't understand me, i'll be happy to clarify whatever u ask.

Thanks!

(i have a desktop xps 410 with xp media and its only 3 months old)

Always best if you can identify “what happened just before problem(s) started”

Good, but then it may not be related to pulling on the power cable?

Anyway, even if you are getting power to the PC do a visual check of cable & its connection to PC

When you turn on the PC does the keyboard lights come on?

Does the PC boot to Safe Mode (press F8 key during boot stage)?

Try starting up PC with only the monitor, mouse & keyboard peripherals connected.

If still obtaining a black screen, look at troubleshooting checks here.

Now post results of your diagnostic LED indication/status & beep codes (if any).

If diagnostics does confirm hardware problems, contact Dell customer support for help.

When asking Dell customer support for help I don’t think too many customers would volunteer that they accidentally pulled on the power cable  :smileywink:
