What type of audio do you have?  If you have the sigmatel and drivers about 1 year old,then your machine will not find SP1. 

 

 

I can't get it either.

i have a sigma tel driver date 1/30/2007. do we have to install those kb's? I didn't

The two KB's I mentioned prepare your machine for service pack 1.  They are prerequisites.

 

However, with the Sigmatel drivers dated from last January, you more than likely have a driver that is incompatible with sp1.  So Microsoft is blocking your download until a fix is found.

 

If you want to check click start, then type device and enter device manager.  Click on sound etc...then right click on the sigmatel HD, click properties, then the driver tab, click driver details and look for stwrt.sys, check the file version, if it's 5511 or less you will have to uninstall to get SP1.  I will guess that your's is probably going to be 5343 as was mine.

 

If you really want it now, you should install those two updates, then  you can uninstall the Sigmatel drivers, reboot and then VISTA will install the onboard drivers.  Then you can try again and it should locate SP1 and allow you to download.

 

I did this on my E1705.  VISTA took a few minutes but eventually loaded the drivers for my High Definition Audio Device.   Then I downloaded SP1.

 

 

I assume you have installed KB938371 and KB937287.  Those are updates that I believe have to be applied before being able to download SP1.

 

Check to see if those are installed, I am pretty certain they will be but just to be safe.

 

Also, I had to check two or three times before it finally found it.  I disabled my Sigmatel drivers and went to WU, chekced, nothing...then after the second or third try it found it and all was fine.

 

If you really want it you can download the entire 400mb file and do it that way.

Dell has this Horrible habbit of putting out updated drivers that work for a whole range of products and then only listing the updates on the newer products download pages.

 

Example a new sigmatel hd driver for my dimmension 9100 comp at work was put out and listed under the dimmension 9200 but not on the 9100 download page. if you download the file the install even tells you its for the 9100.

 

So I suggest going through the newer notebook download pages and check the versions for the latest one and downlaod it.

 

THe main things stopping sp1 from being listed and installed are ouytdated vista sound card drivers. also make sure that you uncheck the microssoft update setting. only windows update has sp1 not microsoft update.

KB938371 and KB937287 says they don't apply to my version. vista premium home version.

KB948343 finally gives us a list of known drivers that prevent WU from offering Vista SP1. Products with problem drivers include:

• - SigmaTel audio
• - Creative Labs Audigy audio
• - Conexant HD Audio
• - Authentec and UPEK fingerprint sensors
• - Intel integrated graphics
• - TI Smart Card Controller
• - Sierra Wireless AirCard 580
• - Symantec Endpoint Protection and Network Access Control clients

Logitech QuickCam also has a problem, but it's a problem with a Microsoft-provided Vista driver - in other words, don't blame the camera! KB948343 has a complete list of affected driver versions and solutions, most of which can be summed up this: get updated driver versions!
