ctrl L/fast user switch not working

Help.  I have my user account controls set to allow fast switch among users. I used to hit ctrl L and switch back and forth between users.   After a recent repair from my windows CD this no longer works.  In order to change users, the last user has to log off completely.  I've tried resetting the controls; no luck.  Any ideas?

Does "Task Manager" ( Ctrl+Alt+Delete)  , click "Shut Down" tab show "Switch User" WinKey +L , if so try clicking it.
Also does the Windows key work ? , try by pressing Windows+D  , should show Desktop.
If doesn't work can be enable by Registry Edit , will check if Windows +D doesn't work.

    Edit
If Windows key not working use Doug Knox fix , download   re-enable winlogo key.reg & install , from
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/disable_win_logo_keys.htm

    (Ctrl+L  is Open a Link . ?)
    ----------------------
You can also download PowerToys for XP which has Super Fast User Switching Option via Windows+Q
just Hold Windows key then press Q & subsequent pressing of Q  toggles between user selected.
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
& scroll to Line 34 right pane "Super Fast Switcher PowerToy (Winkey+Q)

I found you don't have to have "Use Fast User Switching" ticked in "User Accounts" so allow Windows+L to be used for Lock Computer.

I think you are looking for "Windows" button+L not ctrl+L

ok, when i use ctrl/alt/del i do have the win/L option under shut down.  When I click it, it takes me to my user account screen, like is should-but now when I click on a new user nothing happens.  This is where I end up each time unless I log off completely.   When I hit Windows+D it minimizes my IE and returns me to the desktop, so I think the Windows key is working.

I'll check out the links you provided. Thank you.

You could try running SFC , which checks protected System Files for corruption & if found replaces them from reinstall..XP CD .
If it prompts for XP CD , hold Shift key while inserting XP CD to stop Auto play.
Use Start > Run & type
    sfc  /scannow  (space after sfc)

You you have SP1 re-installed if not do so.
Some functions don't work properly without SP1 installed & your previous Repair removed it.
ie: TweakUI for XP SP1 won't install without SP1 installed 1st & Windows+Q for Super Fast Switching requires some users to be logged off for it to work properly without SP1 installed.
    --------------------
You can buy SP1 CD from Microsoft for US $9.95 , saves downloading about 30 MB each time you Repair or re-install. (also has Microsoft Recommened Update NET Framework)

at the risk of sounding naive~is that an update within the critical updates for XP, or a recommended update?  I have all the critical updates re-installed at this point, since my repair from the windows cd.  I opted against any recommended updates as they've given me problems in the past.

i have seemingly more issues than I realized. when i run qfecheck, i get a myriad of lines that read " hotfix should be reinstalled"...... but the box closes and I'm not able to copy the information.  Now my question is, how can one reinstall updates from WinUpdate, when a scan at that site says that they exist on my computer and need no new updates?  I don't see a 'reinstall' option.

Windows Update will scan your computer and present you with a list of updates available for download. If you do not already have SP1 installed on your computer, it will be listed as one of the updates under Critical Updates and Service Packs.
You can also check my using pressing Windows+Break(pause) keys together , if installed it will be shown under General , System.
You can also check by using pressing Windows+R keys together & type
    winver
    -------------------
You can also check if Update was installed OK by downloading FREE Microsoft program QFECHECK
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=155C7C58-102E-47B0-A12A-BFAB8CFCCC03

Install & Use Command Prompt & type
    qfecheck
it will show "cuurent on system" if installed OK.
