Desktop appearance

My "problem" seems minor, but is exasperating .  Two weeks ago there appeared on my desktop screen a white rectangle, or "page", obliterating the right-hand portion of the selected background ("radiance").  The size sometimes suddenly covers and replaces 3/4ths or so of the background.  It does not affect the icons distributed across the screen.  The left-hand edge of the "page" may be dragged to the right, moving any text of the page with it, but it cannot be dragged the last inch or so.  In other words, there remains an inch of white border on the right.  I do not know what caused this, and have tried everything I can think of to try to coax it away, with no luck.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

    martnjg1,

You can try a system restore to the day before this appeared to remove this annoyance.  I would, however, consider the possibility that your system has become home for some unwanted application which may be spying on your activities while you are using your computer.  Consider using AdAware, Spybot and perhaps HijackThis to find and eradicate any such intruder.
