IE 7 Issue

I just downloaded IE 7 on my Dimension 2400 and when i restarted it tells me this...
SmartBridge Alerts:Motive SB.exe-Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point GETPROCESS IMAGE File Name W could not be located in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL

Why does this message appear every time that i reboot and how do i get it off??

I installed IE7 without any problems so far. Maybe I got lucky.

    Azian,
Yes.  You are either very lucky or you haven't tried to use one of the programs with which IE7 conflicts.  Just do a Google search for Browneyedgal_Pa's error message and you'll see what I mean.  The photo slide show problem I mentionned was accompanied by an almost complete shutdown of funcitionality for Corel Office programs that came preinstalled on a customer's Dell.

    Browneyedgal_PA,

The reason the message appears every time you reboot is because IE7 is the buggiest software release in Microsoft's recent history.  Personally, I would immediately uninstall IE7.  However if you insist on using it, I'll attempt to help you.

The Motive SmartBridge is installed with some DSL ISP software such as Verizon Online. Most have an automatic update program that runs at Windows startup.
The culprit is probably the Microsoft process status API (PSAPI.DLL),  a dynamic link library that monitors XP processes and device drivers.

To get rid of the message do the following:

Click on Start|Run.  Type msconfig.  Press Enter.

Click on the Startup tab. Scroll down the list.  Look for psapi.dll or an entry that mentions Motive Smartbridge.  When you find it, see if the box next to it is checked.  If not,  check it.  Click Apply.  Click OK.  Restart your computer.  When Windows restarts the Microsoft configuration utility window should pop up. Check the box that says "Do not show this again...".  See if the Smartbridge message still appears.  Please post back and let us know the results.

Oh, by the way.  If you have a personalized desktop wallpaper program such as a photo slide show of your favorite photos, I recommend you turn it off.  These also don't mesh well with IE7.

I had the same startup issue due to having Sprint Virtual Assistant, a connection troubleshooting tool installed.  Once I uninstalled the tool the startup alerts stopped.  Also consider tgsmith's recommendation as I believe that method will work.  In my case, I can always reinstall Sprint Virtual Assistant if I wish, then try smith's recommendation as well.

One more possible fix...Compare the versions for psapi.dll in your MotiveSmartBridge folder and the psapi.dll in C\Windows\system 32 folder.  If the version in Motive is older than the system 32 version for the dll, rename it to psapiold.dll

This might allow the never version of the dll to be accessed so that the startup alert will go away.  Worth a try.

    Tony,

MotiveSB had already been checked in the startup in msconfig on my Dimension 2400 desktop. It is my server Alltel and my desktop wallpaper is not a photo slideshow.

I am sorry that I ever installed IE7. I should have waited until it has been out for maybe a year when all the glitches and bugs were fixed. Also, it seems that Microsoft was trying to make IE7 somewhat of a look-alike of Netscape. I will not install it on my laptop and may end up uninstalling it on this Dimension 2400 desktop and put IE6 back on it. Like the saying goes, "Let sleepy dogs lie." lol

Go ahead, take the easy way out and uninstall instead of trying to solve the issue. Why bother to seek recommendations if unwilling to follow through on them?

    Good Luck

I did not take the easy way out and uninstall it yet. Sorry for the bit of humor I had on saying that I would uninstall it. I did some investigating and had checked out my dsl checkup center and when I clicked on it and went to support library documents it says this in red "The Broadband Check Up Center is not yet available for use with Internet Explorer 7."

I would have never thought that would maybe be the cause of the problem I am experiencing. Do you think it is? I am a beginner with all of this technical work and slowly learning things

    Browneyedgal_PA,
Yes.  That's the problem.  Your program is similar to the Verizon Online monitor that I mentionned in my first post.  You don't really need those DSL monitor programs.  I never use them when hooking up DSL clients on Bellsouth, Sprint and other local DSL providers.  Uninstall it if you wish to keep using IE7.  That should get rid of the message on startup.

    tgsmith,
I don't get the Smart Bridge Alert:Motive SB message any more on my desktop when I restart my computer. And so far I haven't had any more problems with IE7. Thank you for all your information you have given me. It helped alot.

I like having the Broadband Check up Center installed when it worked on IE6. It would check my internet connection, verify modem settings, and login information when I had problems going to Internet Explorer and would fix it automatically. I had it installed ever since I got dsl, and now I do not know how to check the settings myself with it not being available to work yet with IE7 if the problem arises.
