I have an old Dimension 8300 that was given to me from a friend. It was working fine till the other day I was forced to wipe the hard drive and start over. I used a dell upgrade to xp home disc to do the install and everything worked fine. The only issue is trying to install either SP2 or SP3. The installation runs fine but after the computer shuts down and starts back up the windows xp boot screen comes up and the status bar looks pixelated and then the screen goes black and the monitor says there is no signal. If I try booting to safe mode I actually get to the windows desktop but everything is extremely pixelated. I have done several installs with different variables such as; having all possible updates before doing sp2 install, doing sp2 install right after clean xp install, checking all drivers have been updated, and also jumping straight to sp3.
I do know I have the latest BIOS for the computer
I know I can run up to sp3 on the computer because I was running that before the wipe. And I am using the same dell disc I used to wipe it when I first received the computer.
Anyone have any ideas as to why I might be having issues?
I have tried installing 3 different drivers for the video card the first being the one from Nvidia. The second I tried was from the dell drivers page and the third was via windows update.
I really don't think it is the driver because before the sp2 install the status bar of the windows boot screen was perfectly fine. Now it is displayed as almost a long white pixelated bar. I can try swapping the GPU with another later when I get back tonight.
I also recall the windows desktop becoming pixelated right after I tried installing the intel chipset driver.

Sounds like you need a different video driver. Check dells support site, or windows update.
