LINUX installation

I would appreciate to get some help in order to install LINUX on a laptop 640m with a 80 GB drive, a processor Intel T7200.

1) I need to know if the processor is 32 or 64 bits in order to choose what Linux Fedora distribution to download.
The website of Fedora gives this hint :

"The computer processor architecture is usually i386 for 32-bit PCs, including
the Pentium and Athlon processor families. The architecture is usually x86_64
for 64-bit PCs, including the Athlon 64 processor family. The architecture is
usually ppc for PowerPC computers, including most of Apple's Mac offerings. If
in doubt, your system probably requires the i386 versions."
Should I choose i386 or x86_64 ?

2) What partitioning is the best ? Can I take for Linux the volume D currently used by Restore ?
At the moment here is the partitioning defined by Dell :
Part 1 : 78 MB (OEM)
Part 2 : 53 GB (main volume C)
Part 3 : 17 GB (volume D for restore)
Part 4 : 3224 MB (unknown)

3) I wonder if it is possible to regain the 3 GB that are missing in this picture ?
Indeed the total of the above sizes makes 73 GB which is the drive capacity recognised by Windows,
but the physical size should be 76.3 GB (binary of 80 GB decimal).

Thanks to all good wills !...

For people interested like me in the first question, i.e.: Are the Intel Core 2 Duo processors 32 bits or 64 bits  ? (the T7200 belongs to this family), I have found this URL where specialists give some explanations :

As far as I understood, the T7200 supports both 32 and 64 bits computing, so probably either Linux distro's would work.

beware as the linux bootloader installs to the MBR and kills the control-f11 shortcurt for the recovery rendering it useless

You should have an option when you first installed your XP to make adell recovery cd (essentially a full xp cd)

Try to google for linux-laptop - its a good site

P.S use the 32 bit of any linux distro NOT the 64 bit one -theres more apps for the 32 bit one and its more stable - i dont think the dual core ones do "true" 64 bit anyway i think its kinda psuedo 64 bot

Thanks for this excellent tip !

The output is a tutorial for installing Linux on the 640m with having the same disk partition, and, "cherry on the cake" (french expression), it is in french :
