Media Center skips and can not burn programs.
Hi,
I have Windows XP Media Center Edition and I can not burn a DVD within Media Center. Also my recorded tv skips and pauses. I believe live TV does also. And I was wondering how you can edit TV shows and condense them.
Please help.

(I don't recall if the Update Rollups were considered high prioity- if not, and if you are using MS Automatic Updates, they probably would not have been downloaded.) Download any MCE updates, optional or high priority, offered by the link above relating to MCE.I'm not sure what the Dell rep meant by "resetting the software" but if he meant reinstalling your whole operating system, then you would indeed lose your recorded TV programs.It seems you may have lost the option to create DVD's from your setup menu. (This fix is a bit technical).An easier fix might be to make sure that your burning engine component is installed, and if not re-install it.
Click Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs, and in the left-hand panel on Add/remove Windows Components, and scroll down to "Sonic DVD and CD burning". Make sure there is a checkmark next to it. Click next, and follow the prompts. (You will need to insert your MCE reinstallation DVD)Full instructions are here: How To Add or Remove a Windows Component in Windows XPIf you have been only using your remote to navigate through MCE, it is also possible that you have a faulty remote. Try opening MCE and navigating to "create DVD/CD" using your mouse rather the remote.Finally, the dvredit.exe utility is not from Dell or Microsoft, it is a free third party utility. I have found it simple, safe and effective for cutting out commercials.
- Kathleen:I'm not sure why the Update site is not recognizing your operating system as MCE 2005, but I suspect this is the source of your problems- you probably are not up to date with all the patches for MCE.Open your Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs, and make sure the "show updates" box at the top is checked. Now scroll down and write down the following:
1) All Microsoft .NET Framework entries, including version (1.0, 1.1, 2.0) and KB#(if any)
2) All entries listed under Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, with KB#(if any)Post back with your findings.(No point getting into dvredit until this is sorted out first). - Ok, all you seem to be missing is the Update Rollup2, and the July 2006 Update Rollup for MCE. You should download them in the following order:Try getting the Update Rollup2 (KB 900325) from the link on this page:

(You would lose all your data and files unless they are backed up to external media. A rather drastic solution for this problem!) Thanks for responding. Sorry I have not been able to answer you back. I know how to burn a DVD but my media center edition does not say create DVD/CD. It only says messanger and settings when I click more info on my remote. The Dell guy wanted me to reset the software and then I will lose all my recorded programs. Do you think that would help?
Yes I am using a cable (co-axial) TV connection. It seems to be OK maybe the cable is a little loose going into my computer.
I actually don't listen much to live TV and when I did today it really does not skip like the recorded TV.
How do I find out what TV tuner card I have and how do I get Microsoft updates?
As far as the "The latest is Update Rollup 2 for XP Media Center Edition 2005." I do not have update rollup 2 I have 1. How do I get rollup 2.
And thank you for the links for the editing software. Are these supplied by Microsoft or Dell?

I tried to download the suggested update and several other links following but my system says that I do not have Windows Media Center Edition 2005 but when I looked in system about Media Center it says that I do. What's the problem? Whenever I try to install the rollup 2 or anything. It says that it can not be downloaded because I do not have Windows Media Center Edition 2005. I am still trying to fix skipping of my recorded TV programs which is so bad that I miss a few words here and there. As far as Sonic - yes I do have it installed and checked. But I can not burn a disk in the program by mouse or remote. It won't even do it in Sonic. I have to do from Windows Explorer.
Is there a link to make a standalone DVD copy and how do you figured out how to use dvedit.

Assuming you have a recently purchased Dell with MCE 2005 installed, you can burn recorded TV to DVD using the following instructions: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/using/DVD/burntvtodvd.mspx
Are you using a cable (co-axial) TV connection? Check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends.
