Reinstall Windows XP Issue

I was asked by a friend of mine to help with a reinstallation of Windows XP on her Dell Dimension 4400.  It seems that her son inadvertantly used the wrong Reinstallation CD (a more recent CD from his newer laptop) to begin the reinstall process on his mother's computer.  For what ever reason he did not complete the installation process therefore, they are now receiving a message at start-up that reads "Please Select Operating System" ,  there are two options  to choose from  # 1 being -  Micrsoft Windows XP Home Editiion and # 2 - Micorsoft Windows XP Setup.  This message comes up at every start.   If I choose MS Windows XP Home Edition...the system starts up just fine.  However...I want to rid her from having to make this selection at each startup.

I tried to preform setup by choosing # 2 and utilizing the correct installation disk but I received a message to insert the "newer" version disk (the incorrect one that the son used).  For obvious reason...I do not want to do that.  Is there a way to either get rid of the startup message and default to the Windows XP Home Edition operating system that is already installed on her computer?  I have tried using the Recovery Console but that didn't work either.

I cleaned up her PC and really don't see the need to re-install Windows as her son tried to do but would like to get rid of the message and the actions that are now required at start up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this . . Click on Start . . Run . . type msconfig . . click on the Boot Ini tab and click on Check all boot paths . . if it comes back with one in invalid, click Fix invalid boot paths

    Thanks Rich...

I did what you suggested but received a message stating "It appears that all BOOT.INI lines for Microsoft operating systems are ok".  However, right beside the " Check all boot paths" button was a button - "Set as default...so I highlighted the operating system (not the Microsoft Windows XP Setup - which was set to default) - and click "Set to default" - that seems to have corrected the problem.  I would not have known to look there.  Thank you so much for your help and advice.
