You are correct.   Then install anti-virus software, then connect to the internet and update the virus def's, then do windows update repeatedly, untill there are no critical updates available.

 

Some people prefer to install drivers before SP2. This is my prefered method also.

FWIW,  . . I  install SP2 immediately after installing the O/S . . then drivers ( chipset first ) then updates, then applications.  I like installing the driverson a full SP2 system, opposite installing drivers on SP1 and then upgrading to SP2. 

Rich's suggestion is best for newer PC's, less than 3 years old. And is safe for any PC, so this may be the best method you.
