Finally reistallation is tomorrow, everything (almost) is backed up. However, I just realized that last reinstallation I did long time ago so I need some refreshments.
First.
I have Dell XPS GEN3. Is this detrimental to use Dell Renstallation CD WinXP Home SP2 (I really don't want to install all Dell support things and I have second retail XP SP2 (I think PRO)
, also, time to time I was having BSOD with using USB 2 PC connector program. On the PC with retail XP version I never seen BSOD using this program, but on XPS with OEM XP Home I seen BSOD using this program about 50% of time.
The only work around would be another type of connectiong 2 PCs together - any advices how to do it fast and easy.
Second. When it is time to format, should I format only, or delete partition, and create a new one, then format? (previously, I mean right now, I have corrupted, unfixable file system with some remnants of viruses, I guess).
Third. Does it matter in which sequence I have install my hardware? I have NVIDIA 8800 GT, SoundBlaster PCI, modem card + plus bunch of external devices, almost forgot - I have also new DVD RW (do I have to install drivers for this as well).
And Forth, not that important question (I can live without an answer). I heard before that when I am installing programs I can put them somehow at different places on my OS HDD for better performance - is that true, or I don't have to worry about this (I have no idea what am I talking about).
Hopefully, REINSTALL would end up my 3-4 weeks of nightmares which began with infection by Antivirus 2008 and lead to frequent BSODs...
I appreciate for any help provided and I hope I would not bother many of you again for some time!!!
Thanks in advance....
Edit1. Everything what is crossed out is already done - I am just very inpatient person...
Basically, the only thing from all questions above remains - how to connect 2 PCs together for fast file transfer. I used previously USB connection cable with software, but I was having BSODs quite often on Dell XP, but none on Reatail XP, while using this program. So, I guess there is incompatability problem. I still have that cable - any other suggestions? My internet configured through the router hardwired to both PCs, which (router) connected by wire to modem and so on (I guess there is FTP/ NEtwork creation option, but I have no idea how to do so).
If both computers are able to get to the internet then the easiest method of transfering files is through File Sharing. Connect them both to the router, share a folder on one machine (I personally prefer to create the share on the "new" system) and then copy the files you want over from one system to the other (e.g., on the "old" system, move/copy the files you want to save into the share on the "new" system).
Nothing really. It is just that with a network connection you just have to share a folder, whereas with teh USB connection you either have to run software, or configure the USB connection as a network connection and then share a folder. Since the vast majority of computers already have networking capability (built into the OS) it just seems the easier method (and usually less hassle). ;)
Basically all questions are answered in this thread.
Regarding creating shared folder. I remember now why I moved toward USB - speed of transfer. For some unknown and not well remembered (now) reason transfer speed between 2 Dell PCs in past via shared folder/network was very slow, and via USB was blasing FAST.
I am not sure why was that, but if anyone can suggest tips and tricks, I would be greatly appreciated for this.
Also, if either of my PCs come under VIRUS attack - it got physicall disconnected from Internet by pulling Ethetnet wire off. In such a case I would be left with USB portable HDD/flash to transfer files between 2 PCs.
I did exactly this a few weeks ago when I had nasty thing on my XPS taken over all Administrative rights etc...
So, that is my reason. I will try network this time again - I hope to get fast speeds.
If not, I definitely be back somewhere here for more help...
