SLOW

Hiya I have a new laptop, intel core 2 duo T5500, 2048 mb of ram, 120 gb hard drive. It's slow, infact slower than my pentium 4 2.8 ghz with HT Technology... I was expecting it to be faster since it's dual core 2. Infact it's really annoying, when I load it up, it gets to the welcome screen, makes the vista logon sound and says welcome, then the screen goes blank for a couple of minutes, followed by it loading the desktop background and taskbar normally. What's going on :smileysad:

Regards - sorry got all the specs wrong before

I think some of your problem is the processor. I had a toshebia(sp) with that processor and the same setup I now have with dell. It was sooo slow, experienced the same thing you have. Turned it back in and purchased a dell with the AMD dual processor. This one is much faster and speed is not an issue. The dell techs told me that other processor was probably the problem.

I just paid £699.99 for this laptop! And your telling me that the processor is rubbish :smileysurprised: Ok are all dual core 2 processors like this, it's meant to have 667MHz FSB and a 2MB Cache, so i assumed that it would work well.

    Thanks for the help :smileyhappy:

Your processor is on the lower end of the core 2 duo's (1.66 GHz), but it shouldn't be that slow. I suspect that you have quite a bit of extra baggage loading at startup. Have a look with msconfig, or in my opinion an even better little utility - Autoruns (free) from Microsoft. The download link is right at the bottom of the page.

No, don't post it here. Have a look at the Logon tab and see what you DON'T need at startup.

Thanks alot, I contacted technical support and they took me through some steps. It's working now :smileyvery-happy: . Still not massively impressed with the speed, but I have got Norton Internet Security and Norton Ghost etc running so I can't expect much better:smileytongue:.

    Thanks

You mention Norton Internet Security & Norton Ghost. Ghost won't slow anything down as it only runs when you decided to make a backup. As for NIS, it's been "fashionable" to slam any Norton product for "Hogging" system resources. That was a valid observation prior to NIS 2007, but this version (at least on any system that I have had experience with) is surprisingly lean. There are several published test result reports that confirm this. I have NIS 2007 running on 4 different systems (2 Vista machines & 2 XP machines) and if there is a slowdown on any of these, it is imperceptible to me.

In any event, do you have 2GB RAM installed? If you are running with less than that, or if you are using an integrated Video Adapter (rather than a dedicated separate adapter with its own dedicated RAM), Vista will run slower. RAM is certainly the "best bang for your buck", and if you don't have 2GB, this would be well worth looking into.

Ok I have 2gb of ram. I would just like to say that norton internet security definitely slows down my daughters computer, when she logs onto her computer she cannot do anything, even click start until norton has loaded. I tried the DELL restore and then installed norton straight onto that, and again the same happened, same with my friends laptop. Norton is fine on these 'better' processors.

    Daugthers computer

    AMD sempron 2.0 ghz
    512 mb of ram
    Intergrated video
    Windows XP

    Nothing special :smileytongue:

    Anyway thanks alot :smileyvery-happy:
