SMTP Configuration problem with domain

Hello,

Running Windows 2000 Server on a Dell PE2550 and DNS server. Local network domain was named the same as the web domain hosted at a web hosting company.

In the local domain there is the main W2K server named xxx.com (I didn't set it up, he hired someone to set up the network) as well as another W2K server running IIS, etc for development. The main web server at a hosting company also is the xxx.com domain.

My problem is, if I try to send an email through the SMTP server as AspMail from serverobjects to a mail account at xxx.com, it doesn't go through to the xxx.com mail servers hosted at the hosting company. It is trying to go to the local domain xxx.com instead, where there is no mail servers and therefore dies, going to the badmail folder and adding an entry to the event viewer that it couldn't be delivered. At least this is what I think is happening. If I send the email to another email domain, I receive it. I'm thinking this is the problem because if I ping xxx.com, it resolves to the local server IP address, however, if I ping www.xxx.com, it points to the main web server.

I added in DNS an entry for www and pointed to the main web server IP and that was how they were able to get to the www.xxx.com site from within their location. What do I need to do to enable email sent from the local server to
go to the "real" email server outside the local domain? I tried to add a Mail Exchange entry and point it to the IP address resolved from pinging mail.xxx.com and an MX entry when pinging mx.xxx.com. This does not work.
If you send an email from Outlook, etc that works because it is using the hosts smtp server entry, smtp.myisp.com.

Thank you,
Mike
