I called and talked with Tom (not his real name) this morning regarding a software problem on my daughter's computer.
Tom told me that he doesn't provide software support, only hardware. He gave me the phone number 1-800-497-2661. That was one of the wierdest phone recordings I ever heard.
So, I purchased extended support when I purchased my daughter's computer. The software that Microsoft provides is OEM software, so they don't provide support. And Dell tells me that they don't provide support. But the OEM software relies on the manufacturer, in this case Dell, to provide needed support.
So where do I get support for a glitch in Windows XP? When she boots up in normal mode, there is no start button or program icons.
Although this is usually caused by a corrupt user account, you may be infected with some sort of virus or trojan as well, so failing this, you may want to visit the virus/spyware forums.

Paul:
Try this. Right click the taskbar, select task manager and click on new task and type in explorer.exe and click ok. The desktop should come up.
