Something always running!

Just recently I noticed that my hard drive is working all the time.I suspect that it is some program thats running in the background constantly,but I dont remember anything that I could have picked up that is the culprit.How do I stop this whatever it is?If look into Misconfig.>Startup there are  whole lot of programs and I would not know which is what?!
Thanks a lot and a Happy Thanksgiving!

    George_c40;

    Go to this site :http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

    It is a list of those processes that are required on start up. There are actually very few of them, mostly dealing with anti-virus.

    Type in the name of each process from msconfig-startup. It will search and tell you if its needed, not needed or your choice.

    I have WinXP Home with great many programs. My startup list is only 4 items.

    good luck

    Only 4?  How is that possible unless you aren't running a firewall and an Antivirus program?  My list is small, it has 19 items.

    I think this is about items in the startup list in msconfig, not running processes. I have 12, but that includes several that are there only for convenience sake. The really essential ones are only 4: two for Norton AV, 1 for Zone Alarm and 1 for my USB DSL modem. I've moved another 9 from various apps to the run- key, using Spybot S&D's startup tool (better than deleting them as I can easily put them back in the run key should I ever want to).

    Rick

    I have the following in msconfig-startup

    tfswctrl
    hpqcmon
    CAVTray
    CAVRID

    I have a .bmp of the startup tab, but I don't know how to attach it to this post

    I have Windows firewall on and have CA's EZ Trust antivirus.
