I have some issues with System Restore using Vista Business. I hope someone has some insight to help.
1. Why does System Restore fail (a "failure to restore" message is displayed upon computer restart)? It does not always fail but I do not know what makes it fail (does it only work if I restore to my own created restore points or if I restore before NIS 2007 has live updated? I don't know -- it does not seem consistant). The one time it DID work yesterday (using the Vista DVD through the Boot Device Menu), NIS 2007 was bunged up upon restart (Norton icon was no longer in the notification tray and could not be opened from the desktop shortcut) so I had to uninstall NIS 2007 using the Norton Uninstaller Tool and then reinstall NIS 2007. I have created my own restore point and then System Restored to this point as a test, and it seems to work (i.e. no "failure" message) but there is no "success" message either (see below).
2. Does System Restore, upon running and then restart of computer, display a window with a "success" message? Yesterday, no message whatsoever was displayed upon computer restart after restoring to a created restore point. Dell Tech Support tells me that no "success" message will be displayed (unlike Windows XP) but a "success" message WILL display prior to computer restart if I restore using the Vista DVD from the Boot Device Menu.
3. Could NIS 2007 be causing the System Restore problems? I know it interferes with System Restore in Windows XP so I disabled Norton prior to doing a System Restore the normal way. It seemed to work but then Norton returned with an error (auto detect could not be enabled) and I had to uninstall and reinstall Norton.
I have read other posts about System Restore and realize that some people do not like it. I would, however, like to be able to rely on it in an emergency. I usually create restore points before loading software or drivers.
Are you saying that there will not be a "success" message upon restart of the computer AFTER a system restore? I was only referring to this restart, not a regular, anytime restart.
What do you mean by "reboot and restart" to clear out the bad file. Please bear with me, I am learning as I go.
When you get errors about system restore, it usually means the file is corrupt. Best thing to do is turn it off, reboot to clear out the bad file and restart it. No, you should not get any messages about system restore on every boot.
