Vostro 220 BIOS Update for Windows 7 64 bit
I can't believe that dell does not offer 64 bit support! 64 Bit is here to stay and it appears that Dell is living in the past. I've tried using bootable USBs and CDs to no avail. Luckily the BIOS update is not required for my home PC. I'm glad I learned of how technologically regressive Dell is before I purchased one for myself. If anyone knows of a 64 bit executable BIOS update file PLEASE let me know. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Why thank you kindly for the link, I'll give it a try. I'm a graphic artist, not a computer technician and the method I used to format my USB for booting was very lengthy and complicated. This appears to be more direct and will give it a try today. I'm also grateful that you let me know that Dell offers only 64 bit support for some models, which is even more alarming. This basically means that your stuck with whatever OS comes with the system you purchased. A win, win solution would be to offer support for both 32 and 64 bit OS regardless of what came with the machine.

WOOHOOO! Thank you, thank you. Worked like a charm. I followed the directions in the link. Restarted my computer, booted fine from the USB, typed in the file name(mine was Vx20-124.exe) pressed enter, and away it went. I'm currently typing on a newly updated BIOS. I had to reinstall a couple of drivers, but other than that, it went smoothly. Thanks again.

WillyWanka, what version of BIOS were you on before performing this upgrade? I am on a Vostro 220 with the q8300 quad core and looking to go to 64 bit Win 7 from 32 bit Win 7. My BIOS is 1.3, your version was 1.2.4 that you just installed.
Are you up and running in Windows 7 64bit?

For whatever reason, Dell sells the Vostro 220 with only 32-bit versions of Windows, and as a rule, they only provide drivers compatible with the OS they actually sell, not possible upgrades to other versions. Most other models DO have 64-bit support, including most of the home consumer line, as well as the Vostro 230 and 430.
Actually, there are scattered complaints here that certain models don't support 32-bit , only 64-bit. Sometimes you can't win for losing.
Not sure why you can't get it to flash from a DOS bootable key, though. But a member here has a site that may help:
