Windows XP Reboot

My Inspiron 6000 JUST ended its three year warranty. It has 248MB RAM and 80GB space and 1.60GHz and it has been running incredibly slowly giving me Kernel Stack errors or something on blue screens and it tells me to run the Chkdsk utility. I would love to run the chkdsk utility again and again, like I had been doing until my computer wouldn't even let me get THAT far. It told me a file was corrupted and unreadable and there was honestly nothing I could do about it. I couldn't even GET to the windows. So I decided just to wipe the whole thing and start over. So now, my computers got nothing on it and I can't even get past all the registration and naming and such parts to get to the windows. I can't even get there. I don't know what to do, my warranty is up. I keep turning off the computer and restarting to see if I can get any further with each try. And I just can't. It doesn't move from where I want it to go. It's three years old, but now it has nothing on it. Any insight?

    More details please...

Can we assume you booted from your Windows CD, reformatted the hard drive and ran a full XP installation?

I can't even get past all the registration and naming and such parts to get to the windows.

Do you get an error message or does it freeze or...??

No, don't assume any of that. I just did Ctrl + F11. I am not sure how to do those other things, but I wouldn't be able to do them anyway. It freezes. No error message. I can't go backwards or forwards.

Reboot and press F12 before XP starts to load. Go to Utilities partition and run the extended hard drive tests. If no errors are  reported, reboot from your XP CD.

Press R at first screen for Recovery Console. At c: prompt, type in:

    chkdsk c: /p /r

    press Enter

    (go take a long nap!)

When it's done reboot and try using PCRestore (ctrl-F11) again.  If that still fails, you may have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall XP from  the beginning.

There are "read" errors when I do the extended harddrive tests. What then?

Did you try booting from the XP CD and running chkdsk c: /p /r ?

It might fix your drive long enough for you to back up your files onto external media (eg, CD), but then you probaby have to go shopping for a new hard drive. :(

On the bright side, the hard drive is a standard 2.5" drive.  It is in a bay on the side of the computer right next to the audio jacks, held in by two screws (on the bottom).

The drive itself is mounted in a carrier (plastics) which can be removed.  The only concern when purchasing a replacement drive from a source other than Dell is to make sure it is the right hard drive type (IDE vs SATA) and that it is the correct height (thickness) so it fits into the bay.

The service manual for the Inspiron 6000 has the directions for removing the hard drive.  From the pictures in the tear down used by tech support, it appears the drive uses an interposer board (basically, an adapter) so the IDE connection can talk to the motherboard.  Make sure to remove the interposer board and put it onto the replacement drive.  If you purchase the replacement from Dell I believe it will include the interboard board, but I am not sure of that.
