There is no scandisk in XP. It has been replaced by CHKDSK. To run it, go to My Computer, right click on your C drive, Properties, tools, check for errors. If you choose to fix any errors, you'll have to reboot to allow it to run. You can also use the Run box and type: chkdsk  /F and answer the prompts and let it reboot. note space after chkdsk.

There is no DOS in XP either. The Recovery Console is accessed by booting to the XP cd. You should not have to use that unless directed by tech support.

For your questions about the Recovery Console, go to Help and Support (Start Menu), in the Search box type in Recovery Console, press Green Arrow.  You will find all you need to know about the Recovery Console, including what one can do with it, how one can install it as a start-up option (which I would recommend, since then one does not have to bother with booting from the CD to use it), what commands are available, etc.

Also the closest you can get to DOS is the Command Prompt (Start|All Programs|Accessories|Command Prompt).  It is an NT command line, but most DOS commands work fine.

you have to be able to login to the recovery console as "administrator" so you shoud set a password for the administrator account if you think you will ever use the recovery console.. to do that, go to start/run and type "control userpasswords2" (minus quotations), then set a password for the administrator account.. it can be whatever password you want..

i know very little about using the recovery console.. the only thing i really know how to do with it is to run "chkdsk" which can be run just as well within windows, as mary explained.. just rightclick on "c:", click "properties"/tools/error checking..

you could just check the top box for "fix errors", or you could also check "scan for bad sectors", but it takes a lot more time for the process to run with both boxes checked..

    JTaylorJ,

To put the answers in context of your earlier post and the reference provided you boot to the Recovery Console using the procedure given here. Since you cannot boot to Windows you must hope that the Administrator password is null (blank). If it is not, Recovery Console will not be available to you and you will have to do either a repair reinstall of Windows or a complete reinstall.

As far as the question about SCANDISK, the post in the thread you read refers to it but provides the actual command which you can use to attempt to solve the problem: chkdsk /p /r (note the space before /p and before /r).

One or the other of the two repair methods suggested should work as long as you are able to log on to Recovery Console.

Hi there! I just ordered a system. My first from Dell. I have not been here (DellTalk) in a looong time. I was wondering Denny, if you have any tips you can give me on setting up my system. It's a Dim 4700 with Windows XP MCE on it. =)

    MichelleR-31,

There is some rather generic advice in the first link in my signature.
