XP Install hung up, but can't stop it either.

Now I know I did it wrong, but here's the problem in a nutshell.

Windows XP install is hung up at "Installing Windows" Setup will complete in 39 minutes"

But I can't get the install to stop or get to a command prompt, safe mode, or anything.  It just wants to persist with the install, but install is hung up.

Can I still save my data at this point?

How do I get out of the install?

    Skydiver42,

If the installation hung with 34 minutes remaining the situation is addressed here.

You should be able to terminate the aborted installation by holding in the power button for several seconds to power off the computer. If you have changed the boot order in BIOS so that the CD-ROM is the first boot device, when you restart the computer you should see the "Press any key to boot from CD..." message and be able to start the installation over.

Before you do this, disconnect all external peripherals (except monitor, mouse, and keyboard) from the computer to avoid any conflict with devices when installing XP.
