I tried to install the service pack 2 update, and after a long wait, I get an error message that it was unable to complete? and then undoes everything?
Order the SP2 CD and avoid the rush. Be sure you have followed all the do's and don'ts from Dell and MS about prep, prior to attempting to install SP2.
I ordered the CD, and I did follow all of the do's and dont's for downloading. I still don't understand why I would be denied? It doesn't give any explanations?
I do have the cd and was still denied the second time. First time was download off the internet this time from the cd. Same thing completes then undoes everything. Now cannot access email, may or may not be related. I had just done a complete maintinance on the pc. Complete anti virus scan with norton, ran spybot, and adaware, did a chkdsk, cleaned all tmp and cookies, and defrag, also ran error checking on reboot. Then tried to install sp2 and was still denied. The balloon pops up telling me that updates are ready to be installed still, don't want to waste the time again untill I can get to the bottom of the problem. XP home 60 gig HDD, 256 megs mem, 2.0 celeron. If any other info is needed please let me know. Thanks Gary
I have done all the same things Gary has done as well. I have also disabled my antivirus software McAfee- and still doesn't work. My Laptop is very new. Just got it last XMAS. It's an Inspiron 8600.
The CD order will take 4-6 weeks to get. Judging from Gary's message, it doesn't sound good.
I just talked to the person that owns the pc and he called msn and they said it was the permission for the users. he said he went in and changed the permission on all users and it installed and finished and everything is great now hope this helps someone else. Thanks for all your help. Gary
