Dell X1018P - Revert image-1 to active using CLI, after failed firmware update
Hi all,
Tried to update firmware to 3.0.1.9 using the admin GUI, but it failed and haven't been able to logon since despite factory reset.
Have noticed via CLI that the active image is firmware version 3.0.1.9 and the startup-config is also pointing to this:
------------------ show bootvar ------------------
Image Filename Version Date Status
----- --------- --------- --------------------- -----------
1 image-1 3.0.0.64 25-Feb-2015 09:05:11 Not active
2 image-2 3.0.1.9 12-Oct-2021 11:42:18 Active*
startup-config:
config-file-header
v3.0.1.9 / RASTUTE_800_021
CLI v1.0
set system mode L2
policy-based-vlans active
Is there any way I can switch back to select image-1 for the next boot using CLI?
Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Normally this asterisk "*" belongs to the not active image and it indicates that the image will be run on the next reboot. I haven't been able to find a way to change that from here at the moment. But can you try to restore your backup from here? https://dell.to/3faQcjI;

Thanks for the link, but those steps are for the admin console, which I cannot access since the failed firmware upgrade. I haven't been able to find equivalent CLI instructions.

FlashJ,
I am not sure that is an option due to being limited on what you can do on the X Series switches. In your case, what I would recommend is that you either replace or factory reset then reinstall again.
Let me know if that resolves the issue.

Hi Chris, thanks for your reply. I have tried to factory reset, but the switch still loads the later software version and not the factory version, see below:

Hello, as the OP said "Tried to update firmware to 3.0.1.9 using the admin GUI, but it failed" if that's the case, we recoomeind use CLI mode. Hope the attached helps. I will leave here for the future reference.

NOTE: Not an IT pro but a competent user
I have just had the same issue as described above, but I am not able to even connect to TFTP as the MAC address keeps being blocked by SNMP when trying to connect.
Is there anyway to pull the file from the front facing USB port.. I could not see a way to identify this in the CLI although a USB drive can be detected when plugged in. Alternatively, would anyone have an idea how to edit the config to allow access to the network device.
This is very frustrating as I was setting up a clean install and thought that it would be good practice to install the latest F/W version.
Many thanks in advance

I have PuTTY running and connected and can see the scripts loading and telling me that a connecting machine via LAN is blocked by the SNMP.
What would be the syntax to allow me to copy from a USB flash drive connected to either switch itself or through the terminal? I saw the code above to copy from TFTP but as I can't connect through the LAN this is not an option (I think).
Many thanks

@Dell-ErmanO Many thanks.. .this was actually easier with the USB drive for the X1018 switch
FYI: I prepared the USB drive with the version of the SW that worked previously, and then used
copy usb://filename.ros image
I was then able to reload and downgrade the SW version and can now access via the GUI

I was having this same issue after attempting a firmware update through the GUI and the usb command worked to downgrade the software and bring it back from the dead.
SSH into the switch through MobaXterm, enter the credentials...
copy usb://filename.ros image
In my case, X1052P on fw 3.0.0.94
trying to get to latest 3.0.1.9
I haven't successfully updated the fw yet but going to see if I can through the SSH console instead of GUI.

Hello,
https://dell.to/4dSZuxk
You can extract the zip file and check release notes for firmware upgrade on CLI mode (serial console)
it is quite a simple method to upgrade in CLI mode and there are two files you need to update one by one (1.x10xx-3019.ros(NOS files) , 2. x10xx_boot-10025.rfb (boot file).
I hope this helps.

Who thumbs-upped that post??? Not really that helpful at all.
Issue #1 - updating firmware following the exact procedure listed in the docs results in a failed GUI boot situation
Issue #2 - going backwards in firmware was not straightforward at all, in fact just inserting a USB with higher firmware results in an auto update and boot to latest without any warning
Issue #3 - why can't the firmware be upgraded?
note about issue #2, when following the procedure to copy older fw version
remove usb before boot because if there is other firmware on it, it will just grab that on reboot... a real nightmare because the gui is so slow to tell any kind of information about whats going on.
@DELL-Young E Yes, I've tried with CLI mode. The switch will not boot the GUI with latest firmware at all, no matter how I do it. Luckily I was able to go back to 3.0.0.94 and it functions, but the GUI is so slowwwwwwwwwwwwww. It's painful. I was hoping the latest firmware would speed things up.

Hello thanks for clearing your needs.
Despite the failure, I recommed that you go back to trying another update on this. I wonder if the update was done properly, step by step.
https://dell.to/3yQQl9w
This link may help.
First time update
After first time upgrade is completed, then you carry out second time upgrade for bootcode as below.
You need to select which version you needed to boot up. Again, please check out the link above to see to select the latest version to boot up.
Click the apply button, the switch should reboot by itself.
If you need remote session, you can officially raise a ticket through
