GPU question?M18x
Why is the m18x offered with a gtx560m,then sli560m then finaly the powerful gtx580m in sli.but no option for a single gtx580m? Why offer the 580 in sli only? and why is the only single card option a gtx560m,You would think the most powerful pc on earth would have single 580 or amd 69990m,Even the m17x has a 580gtx,and about 4 other pc makers offer 580s in even 15 inchers.I just cant believe an m18x with a huge hi res screen that easily outputs to a big screen or external monitor would offer the 580.I have been scratching my head over this.Sli 580 but only 560 single and the smaller m17 gets a 580?Any reason? Please help me to understand that move some people and some games prefer single gpus, and have less driver and bios it makes no sense to me at all.

I have an sli M18x now,but if I remember my other with 560 single it needed a reboot as it didn't have optimus,I dont think the FN+F7 is like m17x the m18x is different. However Dell changes alot so who knows now,you could try support but I don't think they will be too helpful as they read basic info back to you.I'm going to check into that for you,if you still don't get help.As you see my post went un answered here so I found the info elsewhere!I'll look into it though my buddy has a single gpu M18.
Hello thanks! hope to get an answer as Dell singapore is unsure about this.
currently dell singapore has send down their onsite technician twice trying to solve my problem.
And only after 2 onsite services, the manager of dell singapore technical department called me up and said the following:
"Dell build this m18x with a single nvidia 560m UN-switchable to intel hd and if i wanted to switch to Intel HD i will need to pay to install a new nvidia 580m(Which works now with Fn+F7 to switch to Intel HD)"
I'm all willing to pay. But just need to confirm as Dell singapore technical department is unsure about this. Insisted that their lab test m18x is UN-switchable too.
If that's the case, Why didnt the Customer service officer confirm that with me when i first called up instead of wasting two days of my time getting their onsite technician trying to resolve my problem...
This is as good as saying it will never effectively be able to use your system on battery.
Disappointed Owner of M18x...
I will try to find out as soon as he calls hes working if you find out in the mean time ok,but I understand how support tells you different answers only confusing you further,I will try to help as quickly as possible,I dont remember my old single gpu M18X.
You are right, but Im not surprised level 1 techs arent very knowledgeable about most products beyond what they look up while talking to you,you can go to NBR forums and check with the guys there they have a dedicated M18X forum among others, they are way better at getting answers you just may have to wait a bit for a post back answer as there is so much activity there.Alienware & Dell even go on there for info and to help and ask our opinions all the time.I found a heat issue that went all the way to dell engineering and found a great team from a dell rep who was on at the time.Thats the best forum for us M18X owners.
