Alcohol can kill a processor ?????????

I removed a heat sink from a Pentium  3   933MHz processor I removed the cloth type tape on both the heat sink and the cpu--I cleaned both really well with alcohol 99% isopropyal type, I reattached the cpu then the heat sink. powered up the computer and got NOTHING -----------but the video card information NO POST ----ZIPPO--.

I checked the cpu for any bent pins ----they are fine  it seats really well and the securing arm locks it in just fine. The cpu gets warm [heat sink is now off] but not hot.

This unit will not enter POST not one beep-------the computer is a Dimension 4100.

Does this sound like a mobo and or a cpu problem-the unit was working fine until I introduced the cpu to a alcohol bath ???

Any ideas

Wait wait wait let me see if i got this right... you cleaned off the tape on the CPU and heatsink, and then reatached the heatsink to the CPU with NO thermal adhesive?  Now your trying to boot the computer with no heatsink?  Thats your problem.  The Pentium 3 (and 4) will not boot if it overheats to quickly, and instead will just shut itself off.  I may be completely reading this wrong though, its kind of hard to tell.

I'm with cali, you NEED a thermal compound or thermal pad between the heatsink and cpu. A good thermal compound like Arctic Silver or Alumina is recommended over a pad.

a bad cpu won't even let the video card post....

are you positive you didn't bump any wires or jumpers while digging around in the case?

No No------I cleaned the heat sink and the cpu then put a thin layer of Antec Silver Thermal Compound on both then installed the cpu and the heat sink--then I turn the computer on and  no post---just the video card info --then I tried another video cardiii same deal and still no post.

Well, what else did you take out?  It sounds like you misplugged a power or data cable.  It could also be your memory, but I doubt that...

why did you even do this in the first place?  was there a problem previous to this that prompted you to take off the thermal pad?  if it was running fine before why would you do this?

With everything [both IDE and Floppy connectors & all cards] disconnected from the mobo except the 2 power supply connectors--I should be able to POST correct--as I said , nothing not a beep. Its a clean mobo.

I wanted to put a fan on the heat sink [direct] and I was looking for an ID off the sink--------in the process I seperated the cpu from the H/sink-cleaned it and reinstalled it and here we are

The WHY I did this is not the question------ The question is WHAT happened after I did it. my thoughts were could the alcohol get inside the cpu and cause a problem---if the cpu died would there be an error message---all the drives are running------the only thing that seems odd is that even thought the drives have power the PS is ice cold  but the fan is running. When I changed video cards [2] to be sure it was not the card , the screen on the monitor would engage MOST [2 times in 10 it would not] of the time and sometimes show a complete Dell Logo and sometimes it would show only 1/8 of the dell logo--

I cant get to setup-again the CMOS seems to have evaporated ??????????????

i only asked this because if there was anything going on before that maybe it could help someone on here solve your problem.  if everything was 100% before then it does not matter.  i was just wondering if there where any signs of trouble before you did this.
