Computer is weak
I cleared out my computer completely (reinstalled windows). Ever since then the system has become "weak". When the hard drive is active and moving, the mouse freezes and my audio stops. When I click apply on a set of properties ( ie- display, modem, program, system properties) the system will freeze for a while. So everyone automaticly says to check msconfig.exe and uncheck my startup items...or look at task manager and snoop around with some of the useless applications running...or check to see if a virus is present...well I wish it helped but it hasnt yet.
The computer is fast--dont get me wrong, with a complete startup at 1:03, and a overall program performance, it is just the "basic" elements that are not working. Should I remove as much data as I can of my 3 GB used out of 20? Should I buy more memory or a new sound and video card? Please help
Oh, my monitor ( Dell e771p) has become hard to read. I find it hard to read what I am typing now actually. I tried Degauss, disconnecting the cable, changing this and that settings, and removing all gadgets including speakers away from the monitor but no luck, any clues?
Thanks in advance,
Garrettone

garrettone,
Have you reinstalled all of the appropriate drivers after you reinstalled XP? Detailed instructions are here.

ok im am almost certain that you are having the problems becuase after the OS was reinstalled you did not install all drivers. please check the device manager and make sure all drivers are installed.if you have your dell drivers cd install ALL drivers. i have experience this before befrore i came to the realition that it was a driver problem. also go to windows update and make sure everything is updated becuase this may correct some driver problems.
good luck

First u have to less memory, 128 MB isnt enough for using XP and XP takes alot of memory. Just look at task manager after u start up XP and u will see around 100 MB goes to XP already. So get at least 256 MB or 512 MB is good.
About u monitor, I got no idea!
- garrettone,
I believe all the other people who have responded to you in this thread have valid points, particularly xperion2002's comments about memory. Microsoft lists 128 MB as their recommended minimum amount of RAM to run Windows XP. In real world usage, however, it's more accurate to say Windows XP will hobble on 128 MB of RAM rather than 'run.' 512 MB is widely considered the sweet spot for Windows XP in regards to memory. I'd have no less than 256 MB under any circumstances.
Oh, one thing about MeEqualsMischief's recommendation to download Windows Updates. Be EXTREMELY careful if you download driver updates from the Windows Update site. If you install even one that's not designed specifically for any given hardware component in your system you'll be sorry. Trust me on this.

You don't give us much to work of in regards to your computer's specs. All anyone can determine from reading your post is that you have a 20 GB hard drive. It would help to know what model your system is, what version of Windows you're running, how much memory is installed in the machine, etc. There may be chipset or storage controller drivers you didn't install after reinstalling whatever version of Windows you're running.
Please post more information if you'd like someone to help you.
