Wow, the old Dimension 2400. There's a blast from the past.

I'm going to be honest with you, a system that old really needs to have the operating system reinstalled. You've got a few unrelated symptoms that could reflect hundreds of possible problems. The simplest way to sort them all out is to reinstall the Dell factory hard drive image.

Before you jump in, do you have all of your important files backed up?

Unfortunately no. It allows me to see the files, but won't let me back them up.

You may try booting into safe mode to check the status.

Restart the computer and tap F8 at Dell logo. Select Safe mode with networking/Safe mode.

Now check if the issue persists in Safe mode with networking/Safe mode.

You may also try “Last known good configuration”:

• Start your computer.
• When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
• When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
• If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.
