Hardware recognition problems...
(I've posted 2 times in the BIOS Forum, and got a reply, but it did not fix the problem)
(original post)
Hello folks,
I'm having problems with restoring my system. My system is an XPS T600r. I've updated a couple of componants, but that don't seem to be the problem. The system worked very well with the upgrades I installed, but when my son was playing a downloaded game, (Sega, or older Nintendo game engine I think), the system crashed. I got a blue screen, with a Windows fatal exception error, ( I forget the code #). I've tried the restore system stuff that came with the machine with the restore disk. I'm somewhat familiar with computer systems, but not an expert. My problem is that I cannot get my system to recognize the hardware that is on the motherboard. I've upgraded the video board to an ATI RAGE FURY 64 Meg video board (from an ATI 16 Meg board), I've added 2 (128 meg) ram chips, a Sony CD-RW drive, an extra 40 Gig. Maxtor (7200RPM) hard drive. In my attempts to restore my system, and getting frustrated, I updated my BIOS to A11, the original was A07. After installing Windows 98, which installs ok, it does not recognize my modem (U.S. Robotics PCI Voicemodem), my sound card (Turtle Beach Montego II), USB interface, and serial controller. Every attempt to fix seems to bring up other problems. I've tried to get the original A07 BIOS file, but cannot get it.
(Second Post)
I tried to clear the NVRAM, but it did not work. I tried it twice to make sure I did it right. The jumper was changed for Maintenance Mode during both attempts. I still have an Ethernet controller, (which I do not use - not hooked to network), Multimedia Audio controller, and PCI Serial controller which do not get detected. Also, my US Robotics PCI voice-Modem does not load it's drivers either, (from seperate disk). I see the .inf files (dirvers) when I click to browse the CD when trying to pick my modem from a list. After picking the 3cpcicvm.inf, Win98 SE does not even detect the modem. The sound card is a Turtle Beach Montego II w\Audiostation32 that does not work when it does load, (which it does sometimes).
While booting, I did watch the 4 diagnostic lights on the back of the PC, and during the boot, The diagnostic lights are all Green after it finishes the boot-up. Also, after the initial problem, and before posting the first message, I tried upgrading the BIOS from A07 to A11. I hope this helps with a solution.
Thanks again,
George

Thanks for the reply. I have Windows 98 SE on my system. I tried several times to reload the drivers from the disks that came with the system. The modem came with it's own disk, but still will not recognize the drivers when I go to load them. The .inf files show up in the install drivers window, but when I select any of them, it won't let them load. Does Dell have drivers for the serial controller and USB controller? Thanks again.

You need to find and install the drivers for each component that has a problem. If the component came with your Dell the drivers should be on one of the disks that came with your system or a newer version may be found on the Dell support site.
If you added one the drivers should be on a disk that came with it, or a newer version may be found at the web site of whoever made the part.
Since you have XP installed some drivers that came with your system or with the parts my not work with XP. If you are lucky, you can find the XP drivers for each part at Dell or the makers web site.
