JAVA SCRIPT NOT WORKING

WHEN I SIGN ON TO YAHOO AND WANT TO PLAY THE GAMES, I GET THE ERROR MESSAGE "JAVA CORRUPTED OR MISINSTALLED". I WENT TO THE MICROSOFT SITE AND DOWNLOADED THE VM UPDATE AND INSTALLED IT AS DIRECTED, BUT NO LUCK. I STILL CANNOT GET INTO THE GAME AREA.

ANYONE KNOW HOW TO SOLVE THIS?

THANKS,

BILL

    Hi,

I'm not sure if this will help: you use the term JavaScript in your subject line, but not in your reported error message. JavaScript is a misnomer of sorts; it doesn't involve Java, so will not involve the VM. Since upgrading the VM didn't work, you should upgrade or reinstall, as the case may be, your scripting engine. You may do that from here. Some run v. 5.5 without problem, but I had trouble with it and had to revert to v. 5.1, which is what I linked you to. If you run Win ME, you may want to consider v. 5.5, although that will still be an upgrade from the default ME install.

    Hi,

How are your settings handled in Tools | Internet Options? You want to have your overall Security at Medium (Security Tab), then click the Custom button and check that out. Without going through the entire list, be certain that either unmarked controls or scripts and controls and scripts marked as unsafe are disabled. Scripts and ActiveX controls marked safe, either be prompted or enable, depending on your security wishes. Set the Java setting for Medium.

On the Advanced tab, have the JIT compiler checked and you may need to also enable the Java console. I don't have it enabled, but I don't know the specific site you want to go to in order to test the need for it.

If you could post the site where this first happens, someone can test the site on their system and see if they can tell any settings you need to have in your Internet Tools settings for this to be successful.

Thanks, I'll try your new suggestion. I was trying to access the Yahoo game section specifically Cribbage.

I did some of the things you suggested but will go through your list as there are some things I didn't try.

    I'll keep you posted.

    Thanks

    Hi Bill,

I was able to access tech support for Yahoo! Games and came across a couple of articles which may be of interest to you:

Scripting Errors, in the event that these are still arising.

Game does not finish loading, relating to how they want your Java-related settings to be for Yahoo! Games. There is also a link here to a compatibility page, to be sure you have the features and installs that they want.

These should be your guide, rather than my more general fixes, which are meant for routine internet travel. In addition, the home help page is here.

Good luck with it, and please do let me know how it goes :)

    Kay,

Thanks for your help but nothing is working. I went to all the resources you suggested and did everything they suggested but I still get the same blank page. I did run accross one item in your resource list that suggested it could be a cable connection problem. It was for an error message i was not getting but I tried it any way. No luck. Even when I sign on to AOL using my 56k modem I cannot get the page to come up.

I e-mailed Yahoo but after 3 days , still don't have a response. Interesting, that on my last computer I didn't have this problem and I was using a cable hook up.

    I'll keep you posted :(

    Thanks again

    Hi Bill,

I'm so sorry this isn't working out well; I've run out of useful suggestions, I'm afraid. If it were me, I would consider downloading an archive copy of the install files for Netscape 4.76 and installing it, just to be able to play the games. If you do this, don't let their download manager handle it; instead, choose to download the file to install it later. Not only does this save you download time, should you ever want to uninstall it, then reinstall it, but their download manager is full of errors, so you want to avoid it if you can.

If Yahoo! doesn't get back to you, you might consider Netscape as an alternative to either trying to repair your current IE install, or uninstalling IE and reinstalling it again, in the event that there is other damage to the IE install that only shows up at the Yahoo! site.

Let me know how it goes,

    Kay

    Kay,

Got your message. I will give it a try. Now that you jogged my memory, I think I was using Netscape as my browwer on my old computer.

I'll give it a try and let you know.

    thanks,

    Bill
